View Full Version : My God Half Life 2 Looks Sick... Can Any One Give Me Some Spoilers On The Original??

I am not the kinda person that follows stuff like this too much, cause I hate getting excited about something I know is months away, but with HL2 so close to being releaseed, I went and downloaded the 25 minute game movie from Fileshack.com and man, that game just looks cool as hell.
I am not a picky or finicky game person, if a game looks good, I'll probably like it. I liked far cry, I loved doom 3 (haven't finished it yet) and this game just looks like another great game to play.
thing is.. I never played half life.
probably never will.
basically cause I refuse to spend $20 on a 5 year old game.
I don't care if it's a classic, for a 5 year old game, I don't think I'd pay even 5 dollars for it. its just too far before my time.
soooooo.... if someones got a few minutes to give me a short break down of the first HL game, so I can understand the back story to the second one, that would be cool :D

they are porting the original half life to the source engine :D
here are some older screenshots from me. its only 800x600 and without aa and af :D let me know if you want a high res version of a pic :)
they look really nice when they burn :devil: but the sound they make is horrable...
(save all those pics in a folder and then use the windows preview and switch forward with the arrows on the keyboard for a short movie :D)

oh, and to see the pixel shader effect on this barricade window shields you have to save this 3 pics in a folder and use the windows preview and then switch from one pic to the next with the arrows :)

is that hl: source?! how did you get ahold of it?!, i played like half of half life because i uhh aquired it for free, but then i lost it, i totally agree with you Kunaak, i absolutely refuse to pay 20 bucks for a 5 year old game, when hl2 comes out how can we get hl: source though? it only comes with the collectors edition, and im not paying 80 bucks for a bunch or stuff that prevent me from getting laid for another couple years
as far as i can tell that looks to be hl2 or at least some of it. tho the pics showing the view through the window (last few here) i haven't seen before, but from the surroundings, i guess this is the black building of which the front smashes down during one of those preview video things...

and yes its all from hl2, and i think hl source will be in the silver pack for 80$, you get cod hl1 and hl2 all with the source engine i think.
d3 is such a joke compared to hl2 :D
d3 looks like playing with plastic monster dolls, it all looks artificial and like made out of plastic imo, hl2 looks way more realistic :)

I don't think you can just "buy" the source engine to Hl2. Its worth millions of dollars. :stick:

Hes not talking about them including their code, the hl2 engine is called the source engine. Valve is including hl1 remade on the source engine.

i like d3s graphics. its "render"-look is somewhat refreshing compared to those ugly painted textures every game had in the last years.

imo it looks too unrealistic... i dont like it... it all looks like made out of plastic... dont like it...
and sorry, lol, i misunderstood kunaaks topic. i thougt he wanted screenshots of hl2, not hl1. ^^
but since half life 1 is already ported to the source engine it will look very similar to this :)

You play as gordon freeman. At the start of the game you go in to do an expirement that was supposed to be fairly routine stuff. You work for the black mesa corporation and have to take a LONG train thing into work at the start which was pretty cool. During the expirement something goes horribly wrong, and a portal is opened to an alien planet and aliens come through. You spend a large part of the game trying to escape the black mesa facility (and you shoot a lot of aliens) and the military is called in, to wipe you, and evreything else out. You have to fight them too (AI is very goood for the time, and still decent for today) Eventually you do get out of black mesa and you end up going to the aliens homeworld where you have to kill this big badass boss monster.
Another thing is that throughout the entire game theres this government offical guy you keep seeing (the G MAN).
Thats a pretty rough outline, I'm sure others will jump in with more details though.

Well, I wouldnt exactly call it a routine experiment :D
Thats the basics of it though. There is also Opposing Forces which is HL1 told from the point of view of the military (You play as Shafer or something.. I forget the guys name), and Blue Shift which is HL1 told again, but through the point of view of "Barney" who is a security guard you meet up with in the game..

HL1 source will only have new physics and shader effects.....and the same old textures from the original. It will most likey just be A HL1 w/pretty water and little upgrades here and there.

yeah, basically. Thats all its meant to be.
They probably have detailed textures enabled, though. Quite a difference between the originals and the new detail textures (r_detailtextures "1" I think, gotta be on a map and video card that can do it. dod_caen works).
Saaya where did you get pics from HL2???
But Kunaak: I think you get HL1 with HL2???
Otherwise buy the silver pack on steam... You get COD:Source HL1:Source and HL2 and CS:Source... And all the old games...
But saaya: HL1:Source is just HL1 ported... CS:Source is CS ported+new textures... They said that they wouldnt put new textures on HL1 source...
Saaya: You gotta admit that D3 looked good... Perhaps it looked a little plastic... But the T&L is MUCH better than what ive seen from HL2...
I think that overall HL2 will put D3 to shame...
Plus doom3 wasnt even the classic... There wasnt any freakin double barrel shotgun...
But in the expansion there will be :D

Doom 3 had good graphics, but the game itself sucked. It won't take much for Half Life 2 to exceed it.

Here's my memories of HL....just before xmas, stop off at local microcenter....OMG half life for sale...omg...buy buy buy...pay outrageous 59.99 price cause I don't care....run home like a kid in a candy store...install...play...run around in game not listening to anyone...try to buy soda from soda machine..not happening....equip the suit thingee (armor)...goto lab...lab is on lockdown...enter double door...seals...hatches...latches...okay, we get the picture, it's a secure lab...okay...lets start the test...boom electricity...zap zip bap...bad things happening...houston we have problem...DAY-2... ] NOT AS MUCH DETAIL NOW CAUSE THIS COULD take forever [ okay...so out of the lab...through a whole in the wall...pickup crowbar...bash random things..glass...little beetle looking aliens that hop at your face......okay...more monster fighting...1337 soldiers in arctic warfare gear...even though there's no snow to be seen....they do all sorts of team-based tactical jacking...throwing grenades in your general area and otherwise just be bastardly...then comes these little miniature ninjas that flip around like little monkeys and are more of a nuisance...I think then you finally make it out of this underground lab only to go back down into the lab?? or through some caves or something...then I remember like some sewer system and sharks and stuff...it was a mess and I gave up shortly after that..
But then there's HL multiplayer mods like: Day of Defeat, Battlegrounds, and Snow Wars......which were all good fun...

Yes the game is very sick indeed!!! The engine it uses is amazing!!! I was picking trash up off the ground and throwing it at the guards! I was having so much fun. I haven't got too to much into the game. But I am waiting for Day of Defeat: Source. I want to play that more than anything.
