i MIGHT also be adding 30 P4 non HT rigs sometime int he next couple of the weeks.. so watch out whoever is at #1.. im after you!!
owen
EDIT:
Ok, i think thats a little unfair, but i have permission to run it as a service in ONE of the computer rooms at the university (used to work there as a techy) so they can see if it has any negative affects on performance and stuff and they said that if the trial goes well ( 2 months) then i will be allowed to install it on all their rigs. i will in reality probably only ad about 5 or 6 nodes though..lol.. still, an extra 5 or 6 P4 1.8Ghz nodes should have a MAJOUR effect on my production..lol.

That'd be great. If you do this, make sure you install D2OL Daddy so performance isn't affected.

thanks for reminding me. knew there was something i forgot to put on the CD. I deffinatley will be adding some of the rig's, how many really depends on which ones are in use when i turn up and stuff.
I am never going to take them up on their offer of useing all their rig's though..lol.. it would probably take me a few months of solid work to get around them all. lol.
cheers,

EDIT: ah well.. that post was useless.. all this editing has to stop!! lol  but seriously, all i did was explain what the program does and what it is for and my old boss and his boss both were well up for it. and as i said i doubt i will be able to get all of the 30 nodes in that room set up, people will be useing some of them, because of the nature of the room soem of them will probably be down or have been replaced with older hardware (they are the lowest priority rig's at the university when it comes to faults) and the rig's all get changed every 3 years in this particular room anyway and are due for replacement next year aparently so what the hell :) might aswell go with it eh..lol

i know all this Rodzilla, The systems in question are basically one of the public service rooms at the university i used to work at which means they are one of the rooms in one of the halls of residence that are open 24/7 to the students, they are machiens that are replaced every three years and i explained to them (my old boss and hiss boss) what it was that the program did and what it is for and stuff and they were all well up for it and agreed to give it a trial in that one room. In reality i dont think i will be installing it on all 30 machines, as i said it is not only a hell of a lot of work but also some of them will be in use, etc. but they arent mission criticall machines, and they are the bottom of the priority list at the university when it comes to faults, to be honest most of the time if a machine is faulty it is swapped out for an older spare machine and left like that because all the machines are replaced every three years in public service rooms.
Is it a bad idea to run D2OL on their systems do you think? personally i think it's a good idea, i would never go and install it without their permission to do so and such. but mabey i am looking at this from the wrong angle?

No sir! You are just fine! I edited my post right after I submitted... It was more of a general statement. It would rock if you could get all 30 rigs online! That would put us in 2nd for daily production EASY! Anything we can do to help get these rigs going? How are you going to install it? You could push it out over the network!

i edited my post when i saw u had edited yours..lmao..
I did think about pushing it out over the net, they have an update system installed for such things BUT as far as i remember if i set it up to do it as an update it will install it on ALL the rigs in the university..lol..I was just going to go along with a CD and my USB pen drive and install it that way, only downside to that is i will probably only be able to get at max about 10 rigs done (time constraints and people useing the other rig's) so any ideas are more than welcome.

edit: one thing i could do with advice on is D2OL daddy. can it be run as a service? or is it something that is hidden anyway?
edited again because i cant spell USB!! :stick:

Some guy on OCForums put together a script that will install FAH through a network. You might want to look into it. It'd probably take a fair amount of hacking it up, but I am sure it is possible.

might be worth lookign into, problem i am thinking of with that is it would take the same amount of time working out all the machiens IP addy's and hacking up the code as it would for me to just go around the machines and install it on them all individually, fair enough if i were installing on all the universities machiens it would be usefull, but then i think i would use their update system that they already have in place.
or mabye im just being stupid? :S

Yes D2OL daddy can be installed as a service... and easy too. PS2 can do it! :D or I'll do it tomorrow... maybe I can hack up PS2's service installer????
I assume they are using SMS? You can push to targeted PC's... but you would need to know the network names. Get a couple friends to help you install it.

yeh, it is sms they use i think, that service installer for D2OL is ace, i have been haveing problems with 2 of my rigs because people keep restarting them (pc's downstairs that everyone uses) and they never log me back on after the restart, but when its runing as a service i dont have to worry about it anymore. :) any chance we can have this like cut of into it's own thread? it is a bit off topic in the competition thread i think and it isnt really fair on the others? :S

i can find out the network names from the internic server but then it is also posible that some of the machiens on there arent actually where they say they are, etc. they were never too good keeping records up to date in that place..lol

I have split this thread off. And I have also created the D²OL Daddy installer/service integrator.

Let me know what you think!
.:EDIT:. And I hope this help you get that installed on all 30 rigs!!!! I'm working on an all in one solution... D²OL Quick Installer, D²OL Daddy installer (both installing as services) You could burn that off and have a couple friends help you walk around to the PC's and have them done in minutes!

true, it would be totally ace if you managed to make a single script that installed everything. then all i'g need to do is make an autorun file and burn it all to cd.. pop cd in drive and it starts to install automatically :D

woa! nice dude!
set it to run at a low priority just to make sure nothing goes wrong in the trial period!
if you want i can contact the D²OL guys and let them send a certificate or some "thank you" letter or honorary certificate to that university they can hang on the wall to show they support this project with the idle times of their pcs!

D2OL should always run at low priority...

Blergo... I have a working D2OL easy installer. I need to package it and find a place to park it and I'll let you know. Do you care if the pc's fold under a community node? If so then I'll need your e-mail address that you used to register your nodes so I can personalize a copy for you. They would all fold under one node that we create under your profile.
Let me know.... I should have something together by Sat or Sun...
