View Full Version : Question about VSync
Is VSync worth turning on and how much of a performance decrease will there be? But I guess what my real question is...would the performance drop be worth having it on?

I like VSync, it helps my aiming alot... (with pistol and recoil weapons, for example).
Also it gives a very smooth feeling to the game.
Performance drops only if the FPS drops below the screen refresh rate.
You should enable VSync in first person shooters only IMO.

enable vsync for sure, otherwise in all 3d app's you'll get "shredding".
i dont think there even is a performance loss, and if there is, its like 1%-3%.

I find on newer games that won't run over your refresh rate (85Hz for most people) you don't want it enabled.
However for older games you DO want it enabled, because when the framerate exceeds the screen refresh rate you can get "tearing".
It simply locks your MAX FPS to the monitor refresh rate.

no, the performence loss is bigger!
it depends in what situations (moving forward or spinning around) but theres usually a bigger performence hit than 1-3%, a lot bigger.
theres a nice article about it on 3dcenter.org , its in german and a few weeks old, but you should be able to find it and translate it, if not then let me know :)
Alright thanks guys...you all are always a great help as always:D

With Vsync it wont make a difference if your able to keep your FPS high all the time as you just sync to the monitors refresh.
BUT - If you have a FPS drop for some reason (big firefight) and you can no longer keep FPS at the refresh rate then it will drop to a factor of the refresh rate.. if your FPS is very irratic you may find that this makes things stutter and it makes it horrible to play...
Shouldnt be such an issue with a modern system that can crank out mega FPS, but it might be at high detail and resolution.

If you have a good monitor you won't have to deal with tearing. I have a GDM F520 and I never see it tear. On cheaper monitors it would look like the whole screen was splitting apart when vsync was off.

Agree fully, CoD UO is much much smoother with VSync on and its far easier to pick targets, need a quick rig for it if you want AA & AF too though.

Thread Moved as this is more a PC Gaming Question then 3dmark or overclocking question.

I tested Counter-Strike: Source with Vsynch on and off on the Italy map... I was doing 60-85fps without Vsynch... and 45-60 with it enabled. Perhaps when I upgrade my 9800xt to an x800xt I'll turn Vsynch on. :-D

Now that I think about it, I should have just done the video test they have built in, lol. I'll try that later and see how much of a difference vsynch makes at sub 85fps.
Yeah lol...I get 77 something FPS on the stress test with everything turned all the way up on my video card.
