I split this thread off as I felt it to be a worthy topic of discussion.

If you were to sit down with someone and show them the D²OL Website and go over some of the articles and different structures that D²OL is working on, you can give them an idea of what it's all about. Every person I introduce to folding always ask "What do you get for it?, What if your computer folds a protein that is used to make a drug... what do you get for that, What do you get for folding the most" Everyone wants to know what you get out of it... It's kind of sad :(

You have to explain to them that it's for the betterment of man kind. That you get absolutely no material compensation for folding.

You also have to be able to explain how the software interacts with there computer. "Will it slow me down" "Will it hurt my system" "Is it safe” You need to address these things before they are even asked.

Some will also want to know if it's legal. Understandable when you tell them your PC is researching how Anthrax and smallpox work

You also need to explain that it uses up a little more electricity than just leaving your system running idle 24/7.

And the thing that I have found that helps the most is to point out all of the work that D²OL is doing in the area of bio-terrorism. Smallpox, Anthrax. As a matter of fact… D²OL is getting ready to add another Anthrax target!!!!! :D Hmmmmmmm new protein!!!! :slobber:

And finally... warn them that it's VERY addictive... Let them know that getting off of the bottle would be easier than kicking the stats :slobber: :slobber: :slobber: If the person in question values there self control let them know that they will be at the mercy of the "F5" key on the keyboard.

I just bribe people. :D
Some rigs are completely unattended and I installed it without permission in case of friends.
Some people on my MSN list still owe me :)

I had the same problem with some of my friends, then I did nice things for them (helping them install new parts and setup computers, ocing) and then their attitudes changed.

i tell them that running a folding or "docking" :P client in the background increases their electricity costs less than letting a small lamp burn all the time.

then i tell them that several projects have already helped scientists to understand certain problems much better and help the organizations with very limited funds but great idears to work on their projects to help mankind.

I almost forgot the biggest thing!

Show your enthusiasm! Let them know that you think it's cool!

I do this a lot! (Not by design... it just kinda happens)

You let them know how cool you think it is and how fun it can be to be on the team and it peeks their interest! Then they usually ask you "How do I get involved in this?"

Or when you do talk to them about getting into it, they already have an idea of the fun side of it.

It's easier to get young people interested in this because it kind of appeals to the PC enthusiast. The "What can you bench?" crowd! Soon they will be saying, "How much can you crunch?”!!!!!!!

i usually try to get their interest and THEN i mention that it could actually help to cure aids allzheimer and cancer and other deseases or disarm nuclear waste (other project).

young people !LOL!, sorry, i just have to laugh, i got into folding cause of blergo, ive blagged my mum and dad into folding, and soon ill get my sister into it aswell! its fun doing it, 'cause my pc plays games so well i tend to leave d2ol on even when im playing games! i havent noticed much of a stutter. i like d2ol because its actually helping science, and its better than distributed folding, as its properly intergrated

ive got a few pcs folding now, and i dont think that the little cost in electricity is such a big burden :D :D :D
