i have a compaq presario 900 laptop and was wondering if there is any problems known to hurt laptops by folding on them. the laptop will be on quite a bit, maybe close to 24/7 (pluggged in of course). i know i can throtttle the cpu usage for the program, im just not sure how much if at all. the laptop runs stock at 1.33 Ghz and when folding, cpu fan is on almost all the time, when not folding, the fan runs barely at all, and i will never fold while running on battery. i just want to know if i'm harming the laptop at all?

Should be fine as long as you keep it running cool.
can you turn the display off? maybe hotkeys for force external display only. save the display as much as possible.

folding wont harm it, its the heat that kills them.
running at 100% usage will make it hot.
i would say get a laptop cooler like this just to be sure it stays cool.

i can't really tell how hot it is running, there are no sesors to tell me. the air coming out is quite warm, but also is very concentrated stream of air coming out of the cpu's heatsink

just like rhino56 advised you... laptop cooler is a must if u plan on folding 24/7 on your lappy ;)
on my inspiron the air coming out of the blow hole used to be literally HOT... i've heard about heatsink fans failing after extended use but apart from that, this laptop is xtremely stable folder.... so far i had it running max for 14 days straight 24/7 without even restarting it :)
so get a cooler or (before u get it) temporarily lift back of it slightly so there's more air being sucked into it...

make sure theres neough room below the notebook so it gets fresh air. never put it on your bed or floor if you have a carpet!

thanks for the advice guys, i don't think im goin to run it on the laptop, i don't even own it and i doubt it will even be on enough to be worth anything to my stats and i don't want to jepordize any life span on the laptop.

I've got my lappy folding 24/7, Man it get's hot on the bottom. I cant even set it on my lap I made a little desktop spacer that it sits on with a 80mm fan blowing on the bottom when it's just sitting there folding.
Other than killing the battery life when your running on battery, folding shouldnt hurt it a bit.

i've had my p3 800mhz toshiba tecra running f@h for a year now 24/7 with no problems. it is in a docking station which might keep it a little warmer than if it was not. i just make sure that the air vents aren't blocked. laptops are probably built better than most desktops. i mean they are designed to withstand being moved and smacked around a little bit and in amd's case the mobile athlons are usually better spec chips than the desktops. oh yeah my co-worker also has a compaq 2.6 celeron lappy running d2ol folding everyday and has never had any problems. think if you were running some video editing program that had to process for a day or two nonstop. it's just personal preference.

I've had my p4 2.4 folding 24/7 for 6 months now... generally she goes for about 2 weeks at a time before I give her a one night rest. I have her sitting on a vinyl chair. She does get hot but with laptops heat is much less of an issue... the people that designed these things knew that heat would always be present.
