Hey I'm going to vmod my 9800Pro. I have a 10k var resistor and want to make sure I don't fry it if the resistance is too low. I can't seem to measure any resistance with my meter that hasn't been soldered yet. Could the old pot be dead?

well I can measure resistance fine on a regular resistor. could this variable resistor just be dead? The last time I tried the pencil method I got crazy artifacting till I cleaned it off. Anyone else had a prob like this?

Varible resistor will have three legs. If you measure across the outside legs you should see full resistance across the resistor. When one lead of ohm meter is connected to the outside leg and the other connected to center leg then you should see varible resistance when turning the knob. Check ohm meter (zeroing) by connecting leads together. You should see a reading of .5-0 ohms.

thanks I got resistance measurement working now. Quick question, is the center pin the one to connect to the vgpu and the outside pin the one to connect to the ground?

Yes. But it generally doesnt matter which leg is connected where. As long as your use the CENTER leg and ONE of the OUTTER legs.

I typically cut off one of the outter legs to ensure no accidents.

Just make certain that the outter leg is reading max resistance when connecting your multimeter across the middle leg and that outter leg. One outter leg will read max resistance while the other will read zero resistance. It would be very bad to connect the wrong leg on the Vmod.
