Been using the 2600+ mobile for a while now and recently the system has been spontaneously rebooting. I ignore it was oced to 2.6Ghz. The speed was gradually lowered all the way down to 2Ghz. 2Ghz for a mobile 2600+!!! Surely something else must be wrong.
After a corrupted hard drive and inability to install windows, I looked under the heatsink. The as5 was so thinly spread across less than half of the core and it was like that for weeks. Possible heat damage? So what are the prospects like for a full recovery?

could also be your system or memory dying from a too high oc/too much volts/heat...
Could be heat damage, they can take some heat though.
May be the board that degrades. Power regulation maybe. Or PSU. Try to get your hands on some hardware to test, possibly from a friend.
I would point at the memory or PSU, what voltages were you running on them? (overclocked)

I don't think the processor would be dead...your computer wouldn't even run if it got too close to death. My first guess would be the PSU...then the RAM...then the board...then the processors.

If the paste looked funnily applied to you... I would just reapply and fire it up. Throw it together on a desktop and fire it up if you want and if you might be trying new hardware soon. Loop some 3dmark you might find your MHz right back. Worth the 15 minutes to set up if you ask me.

I agree. I put my heatsink on...then took it off...then put it back on with out reapplying. But make sure it looks nice. not sure if this right but I did this....
1.) put a dab on my processor core.
2.) using a piece of plasitic wrap, I spread it around until it looked even
3.) put heat sink
