Come join the Xtreme D²OL team in its fight to stay in the #1 position. We are very proud to be so involved in the Distributed Computing scene and staying atop in any project is a very difficult goal. With your help, we can do it. Now is the time to dedicate yourself to this cause and if you have any questions feel free to ask in the "Newbie Orientation (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=46257)" thread. We are all here to help. ;)

"The Drug Design and Optimization Lab (D²OL)™ works to discover drug candidates against Anthrax, Smallpox, Ebola and SARS and other potentially devastating infectious diseases.

By simply downloading a no cost, non-intrusive software application, you can contribute the idle time available on your computer to emerging microbial diseases and other pathogens that significantly impact global health even when not connected to the Internet.

D²OL, was first to use computational methods to deploy targets against Anthrax, Smallpox and Ebola, and now is first to have a credible SARS target (A target conserved between pig and human coronovirus, the suspected virus behind SARS)."

Geeze... didn't notice you did that. We've been testing this project on-n-off for a little bit now and I went head over heals into it a week or so ago. If you want to join the DC team... that's fine. I don't want to step on anyone's toes either. :)

@saaya: No idea. I used to be able to get myself to that level of involvement but anymore... I just don't have the time.

How heavy on resources is this as my server only has 512mb now since I nabbed the 512mb module for my gaming rig. I found DF to be quite heavy. I run active directory and exchange on a 2003box. So its a bit low on memory.

You're looking at ~70k max. D2OL is the main program which takes up ~17k and that in turn spawns either DockWin.exe, which is ~53k, or GridWin.exe which is ~17k. Only one of these last two will be running at any given time so the whole D2OL project is either taking ~70k or ~34k when it's running.

This switching between the two is what gives the project a thumbs-down in regards to running it as a service. You can start it as one but as soon as it switches between the two spawned programs the service dies. :(

At any rate, after a few weeks of running it I haven't had any problems with the client. It seems like this project may just be a tad more demanding than Distributed Folding since I had to retard the o/c on one of my machines when I switched.

And I'm not 100% sure, but I think memory bandwidth helps in production. (at least on the Xeon rigs I'm running)

Just so you know, I am going to change the image on the stats page to something more appropriate, I just need to dig up the PSD files.

Also, I currently have a working beta for the sigs, so hopefully that will be up this weekend.

If anyone wants to make a background for the sigs, it would be greatly appreciated. No limits on the dimensions or colors or anything, just try to keep the file size down (<15kb).

BTW, I see a number of you have joined the team, welcome! :toast:

You probably can just copy the directory but I installed it four times, changing the install directory through the setup program each time. (D2OL, D2OL2, D2OL3, D2OL4)

Running 4 instances at 2.8GHzx4 you should average 55-65 canidates per 6hr update. Which is pretty darn good compared to the 25-35 canidates per 6hrs I get with my 2.55GHz AMD A64 Clawhammer. ;)

I am just at home with my new a64 3200+,so a have to change the boards in my case xp-m to a64.

Do i have to do something special with te client or can a just close it.

A just ask to be sure that i dont lose some points :).

A see in the client"20 to upload"dos it do that automatic or do i have to do it myself.

PS2pcGAMER

I always upload before shutting down just in case. I am not sure if it matters.

To upload, right click on the desktop icon and go to status. From there, click manual update.

Ditto.. my system seems to run slowly in this project tho, but wait untill i get my phasechange unit on my 64 then ill be set.

Fun interface, altho if you have the main window open it uses 50% cpu to run the java, so might want to get it in the taskbar as much as possible.

Is there a dfMon like app for this? Something that I can keep track of my clients with through the network that outputs an html page???

Also... Can you guys post some tips on setting it up for 100% efficiency? Share your wisdom... What shortcuts are there... what awesome apps are out there? I think XS has found it's home In D2OL!!!!

Hello??? :(

I have also found this... @Jeff... I have noticed you have several dead nodes. This may be of interest to you.

The node # is also hard coded. This makes for interesting problems. Say you wish to wipe out a RH 8 install and put Libranet 2.8 on the same box and want to keep your same node number. In most DC projects, you simply enter your email or user ID and off you go,; not so in D2OL. You will need to copy the node.prp file (for safety's sake I always copy the entire directory) to a safe disk, install your new distro, install the D2OL client (which will generate a new node #), let it finish initializing, quit the client and then copy your old node.prp file over the new node.prp file. Convoluted yes, but at least you can keep your node # tied to a specific machine. Additionally, it is wise to reuse your node #'s as NOT reusing will leave you with multiple "dead" non-productive node #'s. The node.prp file does not just contain your node #. It is a derived file (hashed/encrypted/encoded) containing your node # and email addy so you simply cannot type in it without destroying it.

I was worried about having dead nodes as I want to publish my farm status on my web page. Now if I need to re-install I can keep the same nodes :toast:

DSpy can monitor nodes accross a network, but I don't think it can output data into an html page.

I am still learning the ropes for D2OL so to speak. The Java app uses up quite a bit of cpu cycles when open (just like csrss did for DF), so keep that minimized to the systray whenever possible.

I'd take a look at the readme file in the Sergeant folder as I think it tells you how to run things from a console instead of using a java client.

I'd strongly recommend using D2OL Daddy on your main rig so it is more responsive to your apps.

I haven't found an app similar to dfgui or dfmon or FAHstats that the other projects have. You might want to contact the author of DSpy and ask him if he can add a feature to have the app create an html page. This app wouldn't even have to be able to upload it onto the web as you can do that with batch scripts.

I found my dfMon look alike! Outputs html... getting permission to use it for XS now... It looks awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!

About the java thing... this is really easy to fix...

1.) With the D2OL client up and running right click on the system tray icon (by the clock) and select properties.

2.) In the properties window uncheck "Launch main window on startup" This will keep the GUI from opening when you start the client.

3.)When you do have the GUI open just hit the X in the upper right hand corner and the GUI will close... the client will still run in the system task bar.

4.) It is also a good idea to change the Candidate queue size to 200 while you are in the properties page. This is because a fast PC can finish 50 candidates before the 12 hr upload... this will leave you sitting idle. If you are on dialup change it to something like 1000 so you don't have to dialup to the net until you chose to.

This also serves to safeguard against server crashes. The D2OL servers go down and you have a max of 2000 candidates to have fun with! That's a lot of folding fun for all!!! :D

If you are a sneaker then you can set this to 2000 do your work... and go to town uploading!!! NOTE:!!!!!! Never move the directory around! (Like burn it to CD to sneaker it on a PC that has a Net connection. The program is imbedded in the OS and is you move it the client will no longer function.

...a viable candidate. From all accounts I've read, the rails remain solid under load. Also, the 12V rail is rated at 28A, so that should be able to do the job.
This unit is highly favored among many overclockers.

I've seen it listed for a little under $80.

Can you adjust how much resources the program uses? Like say your getting off your computer for a few hours, and decide to crank it up all the way while your gone, then turn it down when you return. Can you do that?

If I do this, will the system below be a good "crunching rig" for this?

The application does it automatically. It bows out of the way while you are doing anything on it, then once idle again it uses your CPU.

That rig will be smoking and an excellent cruncher. My A64 rigs produce between 170 - 200 candidates/day, at or around 2800 mHz. That is very good for a single CPU rig.

Come join the Xtreme DÂČOL team in it's fight to break into the Top5 worldwide teams. If each and every XtremeSystems.org forum member involved themselves in this project, we could smash into the Top5 and give the #1 and #2 teams a good run for their money. Now is the time to dedicate yourself to this cause and if you have any questions feel free to ask in the "Newbie Orientation" thread. We are all here to help.

Jeff,

Don't you think this paragraph could use a little editing?? ;) :toast:

Also is it compulsary to run it everyday.

Also wanted to ask that will it work only when connected online or even when i am offline.

You can run the agent offline. once you get it registered it will download a queue of work to do. You can then take it offline and it will go to town.

All of your questions and more will be answered in the first post of this thread. Let us know if you need anything! :welcome: to the team!!!

Ok, I think I got this F@H/D2ol thing co-operating so you have my first 91 Cands, I am a pretty small time producer but every little bit helps right?

I am under Stuperman444, For some reason I can't log into official stats with firefox only IE works, which lead me to make this second account and I guess it trumps my first one.

WTF?
this means it is all over...

can't we reconstruct the points based on our negative results on free-dc stats?
most of us have minus thousands of cands - they really give it lost???

No this is inacceptable...

I take it you are talking about this ?

http://www.d2ol.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=000882

Im glad I stopped when I did. What a letdown, not even backups. I fear that the stats were zeroed after all the cheating issue, but thats just my view. Ive spent alot of money on electric after first starting back september 2004.

They had a crash and there backups were bad. They will get it figured out and we will get our points back... no worries.

Quick Question ...

When I go to this site (listed in the first post of this tread), I get prompted for a username/password. Is there a super secret code for D2OL users or is this site no longer active?

AHh i joined:)

Hopefully this project is still going:)

Like to help, I don't know first hand what the troops are doing (British teenager here, emotional too xD), but I know they are royally in a :banana::banana::banana: pit.
Excuse my language.

Not enough body armour, yet we have spent alot of money on 25 Apache AH-64's.

I would of thought get 15 and get more body armour.

We're quick enough to buy $84 million dollar jets too:)

Seriously, the MoD should re think its buying strategy.

Rant over.

I'd hate for our troops to be gas'd like the kurds and turks were.

Your first post is a little strange, atleast for the DC Section, anyway this project is still going and XS still has a few people participating...

Let me or anyone of us know if you need help.
