View Full Version : Composite Speed Question: Changing the FSB

I have just cracked a friends score. However, 3DMark says it is unable to publish it, and i think i know why.

My system is unable to boot at 200mhz or higher using aggressive memory settings. I have set my machine to boot at 9.0x 185, then using softKR7A to raise the FSB to 202. I have also been able to change it between tests (specifically, lobby and nature will run a full 2mhz higher then Drago/Chase).

I have a couple of questions:

1. In the pursuit of a high score, does the end justify the means? I know there are some P4 users, using TurboPLLs to modify the FSB speed above what their motherboard supports, but im in a Gray Area. Does changing the FSB speed inside windows consitute cheating?
2. Does changing the FSB/Video Clock speeds inside windows consitute cheating?

Btw, the result it spat out was 9.0x 185 = 1667 @ 13,586.

Any ideas/opinions?

I don't think there is a problem with changing your FSB via software. I know I do it sometimes w/ the 8K3A simply to save myself from using wpcredit to try to make up for timings that automatically get relaxed at higher FSB's by the board.

I think the problem you're having with publishing the score is related to changing the FSB thru your tests. 3DMark can pick up on CPU MHz fluctuation, and will deny ur project due to it :)

Your correct N8, I located the problem. It was not the CPU speed changing between tests, but i had aborted part of the benchmark, and it was considered invalid.

Heres the result i obtained after much fiddling around:

Should better that by 250 - 300 points today if im lucky :)

Cheers

They are the best drivers to date, almost 200 points better on Low Detail on my system.

The Abit Siluro i had btw was a poor overclocker when i got it. 300/600 was my every day running speed. After a heavy duty lap, 80watt Peltier/SocketA mod, i squeezed fully 42mhz out of the core (342) without any voltage mods.

The new card i have at the moment is a Triplex Ti4200 3.3ns edition card. Its everyday running speed is 330/634 (using a 55watt TEC to keep the GPU near ambient temperatures). I have been able to bench nature with this card at close to 360mhz Core, and 648mhz Mem. This was only at 166mhz bus speed (i cannot for the life of me figure out why it wont bench at those higher speeds).

Are you using a TEC with your 'Custom Aircooled'? ;)

Weird...nope, plain air. Its a rather large 80MM aluminum heatsink & I use a 48cfm fan on it when not vmod'd, and a tornado on it when mod'd, so its pretty aggressive. The card clocked nice w/ the totally stock cooling, I actually anticipated it clocking better than it does w/ the vmod.

Thanks for the tip on the drivers...I'll hafta try them out sometime. :)

Nps, the 40.41s yielded about 200 points less.

Is your video card lapped?

No lapping. I've yet to even lap a heatsink let alone my video card core :)

Just one of those things I've never gotten around to trying yet. Mebbe someday ;)

I was worried at first, but it seems theres a simple method.

Buy a piece of 600 grit sand paper, and a piece of cork. Make sure the cork's side is slightly bigger then the GPU. Then rub back and forth until you can no longer read the information off the core.

Tis easy as piss, and provides the best benefits :)

I dont lapp too , RMA is the reason
