Yea. I heard the "gold" rumour was fake as well. Check out this thread (http://cariad.co.za/twhl/forums.php?pgt=1&action=viewthread&id=4501&pg=1) from a HL mapping site about hl2. Especially the last few posts.

"After a close scrutiny of Gabe Newell's account history on the forums, we've come to the conclusion that the gold post is a fake... After one crazy night of theories, server mayhem and IP tracing, we've finally gotten to the bottom of this mess. In a twist of hilarity, it seems that Gabe Newell's account password was set to 'gaben'. Person x guessed this and made the "going gold on Monday" post which we've heard so much about. The user (who we believe is the same person x) then made this post just minutes ago using Gabe's account:
Maybe he shouldn't have used 'gaben' for his password. Come on Gabe, you could of [sic] thought of something better than that
After a quick double-check, it seems that this was exactly what happened."

Valve really needs to get some security. Their company is a joke.

That's not a security issue. That's just a stupid forums password issue. I mean who here really creates difficult passwords for forums? God knows I quiver in terror at the thought of some snot-nosed, pimply-faced twelve year old going around posting about "Ownzer"ing my account.

This door he left open does effect the "as the web turns" drama and he's not the only guy working on the game. Me and you aren't worried about our accounts probably because we dont care what people think nor are we a target... If he doesnt want to be the laughing stock for his own sake, then for the sake of the greater good at valve. Doesnt it suck working for a dumb-tit because of that fact alone?
It is a little funny when people call it a "hack." :D But I'm not Gabe Newell and even my password is not THAT lame. Anways, yeah who cares, but if nothing else it's funny and is so because it was at least a little shall we say RETARDED given his status as a representative of a firm. People repeatedly posting "ownzoring" would have been that more funny to us, but not so for valve.

Given Valve's tenuous internal security history, I'm not sure I would be that surprised if Gabe Newell used "gaben" for all his passwords

Yeah seriously, I mean... getting your source code hacked? That's why so many people figured it was a conspiracy. That kind of lacking security is just outrageous... unheard of among software devs.
I swear, anytime I hear anything about Valve or see rabid HL fanboys running around, I am just going to start spamming the threads with "gaben".

I worked in the Bay Area for a while after I went to Stanford - never went to high school or anything there. I grew up down the coast in Monterey. I interviewed a couple high school kids from the Bay Area for my old college, Columbia University... mostly from Homestead High. Where'd you go to school?
It's a great area, although I'm not a big fan of California. I still have an apartment there with a roomate, but taxes + outrageous cost of living have sent me running back to Las Vegas.

Gabe should read Mitnick's _The Art of Deception_.
Humans really are the weakest point in security.
