View Full Version : RAM heatsinks for DDR II?

I'm thinking of getting a passive cooler like this (http://www.aerocool.com.tw/aerocool-files-v3/cooler/vga/vm101.htm) or the Zalman ZM80D-HP (http://www.zalman.co.kr/eng/product/view.asp?idx=138&code=013), both with an additional (silent) fan for my GF FX 5950 Ultra.

Now I've read in some reviews that the coolers are able to keep the GPU-temperature low BUT the DDR II can not be cooled properly with RAM heatsinks like those that ship with the Zalman.

I'm re-building my rig to make it as silent as possible, so the noisy standard-cooler needs to go.

Anyone tried this before?

Chips are chips, theres no reason why DDR sinks would be incompatable with DDR2 chips. You could put a ramsink on a PIII and it would still cool it, it would just be very hot and need to be underclocked. (Acctually, I had a PIII without any heatsink on it and it was doing 780MHz at about 60C)

As long as the card doesn't have some sort of huge ram sinks on it already it should be fine.

It has a heatsink, but only on one side where's no fan.

The other side has basically nothing but a sheet of 2mm aluminium on the RAM chips that's not even connected to the GPU-cooler in any way...

Well, seems like I'll only find out by trying it...

... just wanted to note that it actually worked with the Zalman heatsinks.
My video card now is really silent and still overclocked... :YIPPIE:
