View Full Version : Phase change for the 6800's good or bad?

I am aware that the 6800 has a problem when it gets too cold at around 25c. Should I even bother making a hold down for it or just skip it and get an X800XT?
I heard that people have ALOT of trouble cuz of the thermal throtling...
I would go with the X800XT-PE... Easier and alot more performance some places...

anyone having any success freezing the 6800 cards though?? Anyway around the throttling issue like old drivers with the fx5950u or anything??

Lardarse (Shamino) did some good stuff with one. Not sure how he worked around, but he must have.
If I remember, I think it was something in the bios he tweaked. I think the thread is here.

Nice! I missed that thread. Guess I can put the 6800's back on my possible upgrades list. :D

Sweet!!
If that`s the case, then the 6800 GT might be making a showing in the VapoMAXX then. :toast:
has anyone tested this yet??

I'll start making a hold down for the 6800 only if Rukee is successful with the rivatuner on his 6800 lol.

what do I look like??? a ginny pig??
hey, where did this tail come from sticking out of my a@@??!!
It`ll have to be after I beat the last boss in DOOM3, which I just reached. :)

How can thermal throttling be a problem when freezing the board?

The temp scale of the card does not include negitive temps...so the card gets down to 32 degrees, and the temp scale of the card resets at the top of it`s limit and comes down from there. My FX5950u thought it was at like 274c when it was sub-zero. You can imagine what throttling takes place at that temp.

Well, that explaines a lot. But if that BIOS will disable the t-thottling i would say go for it.

So, those are the options to dissable thermal throttling with the Riva Tuner??
Juice

Woohooo! It's time to cut up that hold down! hehehe
unrealneo, was that tested on a 6800 or a 5900?
Boyne7
08-22-2004, 07:29 PM
so its confirmed that thermal throttling on a 6800 can be disabled?
I didnt think Shamino went around it... He had real problems with it... I dont think he disabled it...
But hey dude... Whatever card you pick it doesnt really matter... They perform almost the same... Xept for doom3 and HL2...
Where Nvidia is like 15% faster in doom3 and ATI 20% faster in HL2... Until the official 65.XX drivers are released... Then its about 15%/15%...
Edit: If its mostly for benching then check out the ORB :D

Maybe we can ask Shamino to try out the rivatuner.

I think he sold his card... He is running X800XT now... I dunno if he still has the 6800U but he changed over to the X800XT-PE...

Well then, we can ask our gunea pig...errr I mean Rukee to hook up his 6800 on the vapo and try out the rivatuner.

I've never tried the latest rivatuner to rid throttling. I usually start with warm gpu let it cool down, set clocks and save settings to load on startup and boot into windows overclock and bench away. Its not that consistent sometimes it does throttle also, I have 2 partitions, one to let warm GPU cool down in and one which has overclocked speed saved at bootup. I only enter the overclocked partition after GPU goes down to temperature.
Anyways the card is not sold just returned.
I also disabled the nvidia startup components cept the one for the clock speeds.

Is this the one we're looking for? I found this on the rivatuner readme file
Added 'Force constant performance level' option allowing you to force your graphics card to work at one constant performance level and disable 2D / low power 3D / 3D modes switching. Take a note that it will also disable throttling, so use this option with extreme caution only if you perfectly understand what are you doing. This option is also locked by default, power users may unlock it with EnablePerfLevelForcing registry entry.

One thing is I think its also partly coded in bios or something, When I boot up at evap temps higher than ~-50C its normal but everytime I bootup for the first time at evap temps lower than the region of -50C there would be lines on the screen and I would need to press reset and the lines go away. This is a 100% consistent phenomenon.

Now i'm really confused. I don't know whether I should just change this 6800ultra for an X800XT or just go ahead and test it.
Lardarse, is it worth it? or will it be easier to just get an ATI?
LardArse

Do you want it solely for benching or both gaming and benching. If only benching I don't see any reason to use the 6800U unless you're an Aquamark fan.
Juice

It'll be mostly gaming and a little benching. I'll test it anyway. Thanks

i dont mean to hijack, but lardarse could you help me with a 6800u v modd?
Juice

drcrawn, is that your clock speed on your sig? Is 503MHz the point where you already need a vmod? What cooling method are you using?

Well I've check my article and amended the wrong pic some time back already so you can just use it.

Why dont you just go for x800XT??? It sounds MUCH easier... And if its for gaming then both cards perform the same... So who the hell cares???
ATI has HL2 ---- Nvidia has Doom3...
ATI has 3DC+AA/AF performance(Only like 70% of USII) --- Nvidia has SM3.0 and UltrashadowII
It doesnt really matter... You can play all games in 1600x1200 with a little AA/AF...
If you are putting Xtreme cooling on it then it doesnt matter... Both cards can play Doom3 at max settings...
Just go for 1 of them... I would go for X800XT... First because its easier@Xtreme cooling 2nd because it MOSTLY performs better with AA/AF and 3rd i dont think doom3 is so great... Cool game but when u complete it its on the shelf... Multiplayer in it sux...
HL2 seems to be going alot after MP so thats hours and hours of fun ;o)

503 seems to be my volt limit, as well as the 1.3 memory. Both volt limited it would seem. Ive run these numbers a few times and temps are steady at 44c-45c on the core. I use a non-chilled water cooling setup with the swift mcw block and the swifty pump which is more than adequate to cool just the card... My idle temp is about 30c give or take, Ive been as low as 26c after boot up on a cold morning.
i dont have the cooling to try outrageous core speeds, I would like 1.65v though, which means i might have to go back to a 1.4v 3D bios and do a thorough v modd or try to do one carefully with the 1.5v i already have. 1.77v is too much for my cooling... I would like 520-525 core.
LardArse

I would think 1.77v is tougher on the pwms. Good fanage over the heatsinked pwm + cap area, they get hot. You should try 1.65v first, without bios mod, then see if the bios mod to 1.75v will improve it.

I have the same version RT, but I don`t have those options.
I uninstalled and reinstalled the RT with the same results.

Okay, I don`t know what was up, but I unistalled and rednld`d the exact same file name and now I have those options.
But it refuses to run any 3D apps at all. NForce3 bench runs, but with a black screen, any other grafics benchs it just stalls.
This is what UT looks like at stock VC speeds and forced 3D settings with the 6800 GT at -20c.

Those artifacts look familiar. That's what happened to me with my 9800pro. But that was bad contact with the evap.
Rukee
08-26-2004, 04:44 AM
The contact seems good, in the win display properties it shows 'zero' degrees and the temp scale is pegged out at the top in the red.
I can`t hold off the Vapo till boots as all three Vapos are wired together so if one fails it will shut down the whole system, so there is no way to keep it at ambiant till after windows is loaded.

Wow, I was hoping the Riva Tuner was going to fix the throttling issue :( It looks like i'm selling the ultra.

The RivaTuner fix is working for me. At 15C idle temps RivaTuner reports 500/1250 in the hardware monitor. At 15C it should be throttling down but it isn't...Hehehehehehe It worked It worked.........Sorry real excited right now.

im excited for you, how exactly are you getting 15c idle? And, what can you clock to with that? Whats the vcore?

I am running the Swiftech MCW50-T (80 watt pelt/waterblock combo) on the GPU and Monster Copper BGA Ramsinks on the RAM. I have a heatercore, DD D4 pump and a Delta 120mm fan cooling the waterblock. My idle temps range from 10C-15C and my load temps 25C-30C. I just figured out the RivaTuner fix so I have not seen what this setup will top out at yet. I was just playing DOOM 3 for 4 hours at 500/1300 with no problems at all. I am going to see where she tops out tomorrow. I did flash the BIOS so that all the voltages are at 1.5 volts 3D,2D and throttle.

Section8, are you using heatsinks on your memory?
Rukee, did you remove the memory heatsink when you did that Unreal shot?

Yeah I am using the Monster Copper BGA RAMSinks on the memory. I have an 80mm 38cfm fan blowing air in over them from the side of the case.

This might sound dumb but; if I'm going to use Rivatuner do I need to remove Coolbits? I'm pretty sure that I should at least disable manual OC'ing.
Just my 2 cents though; with stock cooling and 1.4 my card gains 20-30mhz on the core when it cooler out and I'd like to guess that lower temps will have an even more dramatic effect..
gotta put her under water soon :0
edit :: I have rivatuner working and I think everythings cool; just wondering; does the Rivatuner clock tester mean anything? I tried 1.35ghz RAM on the test for the hell of it and it didnt pop any warning of failure at all... I'm guessing its pointless since Coolbits maxxes @ 1.25 under cold boot and 1.22 under load; but what the hell..

No you can run them both at the same time. Usually it will only let you OC with the Coolbits though if you have both running.
