View Full Version : Time for new powersupply?

I currently have an enermax whisper 431watt p/s. The 12v rail drops pretty low when I attempt to overclock both my a64 and the 6800gt. I have been thinking about just getting another 400watter and running two powersupplies. My question is how are these Super-Flower Silent TT-450SS? Right now they are only 20 bucks at directron. I was also looking at the 420watt silent purepower thermaltake at newegg for 40 bucks. Or would I be better off saving up for something like the forton 530watter?

Thanks,
Flak

Don't save money on a PSU. It's one of the most important parts of a PC. So look for a good Antec/CWT/Tagan.
Yes, they are expensive, but it's a good investment.

So are you saying the TTGI isn't worth the 30 bucks shipped? And the thermaltake isn't any good for 40 bucks shipped? Antec, I no longer trust antec powersupplies. I was looking at the Tagan 480watter for awhile.

Go for the Tagan 480W, I have it too and can recommend it to everyone looking for a new psu.
Just search for some reviews :D on Google

Measured by software or by multimeter?

software, can't find my multimeter anywhere. But using the software almost everytime my 12v rail drops to around 11.6v my computer reboots or shuts down.

It would be a good idea to find it, but if not, you can't go wrong with the Fortron 530W you mentioned. The OCZ PowerStreams are nice too, but I may be a bit biased.

the psu is the heart of your rig. do not skimp! with that said, the ttgi 450w is a solid psu, but may still bog with a 6800gt and a64. i would highly recommend spending the bux on a pcpower and cooling. then you KNOW you are set :toast:

My Fortron 530 is running my A64-3500@2600mhz and my 6800 GT@460/1200 with absolutely no problems at all. I had a TTGI before and it was too noisy for me personally. The Fortron is fantastc!

'nother reccomendation for the Fortron 530w

Stock, my 12v rail would drop slightlly to 11.6, but that with 1.8vcore and a 1200mhz overclock along with the other devices running. I adjusted the pot ever so slightly for the 12v and now runs a solid 12.2 under load. This PSU is truly a good value

If I were to get the ttgi it would run as a second p/s with my enermax. Would this work or would I be better off with the fortron?

i was reading that the enermax noisetakers are actually really good powersupplies, i would try to pick a 470watt enermax noisetaker.. i think i saw a review saying it was better then some 520watt power supplies

1 more for the Fortron 530. Running that ttgi as a second would be fine too. I would just get the fortron so you dont have to have two.

Also the fortron comes with adjustible pots. Mine are sitting at 12.5 3.6 and 5.5

I just got a TTGI 450w (4-fan) the other day and it works great. Rails are very stable. $30 shipped was a steal. The noise is just about as bad as the Fortron 530w. There is a switch on the back for the fans (automatic/low/high)

I don't mind recommending it.

Enermax PSU's are awsome, 35a,35a,33a on each rail. This is the

one i have;

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=17-103-432&depa=1

My gaming rig is heavly overclocked, 2600-m barton at 2.7ghz, ATI 9800 pro at 460/371, 2 raptor hd's, 3rd on for storage, 7 total case fans, 1gig ram, sound blaster audigy, and everything running at full loud while playing doom my rails read +3.3v=3.34 , +5v=5.09, +12v=12.08 with a digital multimeter. Im sure this psu will hold up even with a 6800 ultra once i get it. I'm not saying this psu is No.1 but its very very stable and does its job.

I have a FSP 400, and an FSP 530 (Fortron). Both have run my current setups without issues. I prefer tha 530 over the 400 though.

Fortron, (FSP) massively UNDERRATES it's Power Supplies. They are also rated differently than other PSU's. They rate their peak-hold for twice as long as their competitors, and the ratings listed are minimums at rated temperatures, not maximums at a low temperature.. That means that the PSU can handle much larger draw than any PSU of it's rating. This style of rating is also the style that PC Power and Cooling uses to rate their PSU's. Coincidence? No, because FSP used to manufacture the PC Power and Cooling PSU's until recently.

Antec is a great name is PSU's, but I like my FSP and TTGI better. Still my Antec 350watt is a solid PSU.

Now the TTGI 520 is a lot louder than the FSP 530. Even with the adjustable fan knob. To be honest I am looking to buy another fsp 530 for my second rig, and keep the TTGI as a backup. Then again I really want one of those OCZ PSU's!

OCZ Powerstream 520w or PC Power and Cooling 510-DLX all the way

yeah.. I love the OCZ PS 520W!
Tried both TURBO-COOL and OCZ.. I loved the OCZ better.

I can vouch for Enermax noisetaker. REALLY clean rail with less fluctuation than antec or fortron. However, OCZ DDR booster doesn't seem to like this seperate 12v line stuff according to OCZ site. Only minus out of bunch of +++s.

I myself am thinkig about replacing my Antec True 550 with this or OCZ powerstream 520... (Noisetaker is on 2nd rig as it is low powered model... but it handled the power usuage better than Antec 550 on my previous P4 rig... :P)

Any definitive input on OCZ 520 from people who has it?
