took off the asus northbridge HS.
was greeted by this gummy paste stuff
used normal alcohol to get the core clean
put on the AS5, the neoprene pads, put on the swiftech northbridge cooler, system doesn't boot.
everything flashes power, then goes dead.
all cables are connected, i've checked the core, it appears to be intact, the neoprene pads aren't touching anything either. cleaned it several times to slear off any loose AS5 that might've slipped onto somewhere else.
any clue what I might have done to do this?
more importantly, how to fix this?

Some alcohol is probably shorting something... Just wait a day to let it dry, and it should be ok....
And did you disconnected the PSU when you did that?

If you use alchohol make sure its pure, I've seen some that contains baby oil to lessen the chance of irritated skin. I doubt its the alchohol as it evaporates very quickly (long as its not the oil stuff)... I've literally dumped alchohol on extremely dirty boards, lightly scrubbed them, then poured more on to rinse, in a few minuted the alchohol is gone, and no problems. Just to make sure its completely gone grab the GF's hair dryer blow off the board for a few minutes...
Have you tried with the old cooler in place? Fan connector on the cooler wired right? Carefully start over, make sure your motherboard is clean and has no debris on it at all, reclean the core, examine closely for damage. Reset the CMOS? Weird things sometimes happen for no reason at all... You can even boot the board with no northbridge cooler in place at all, I've run a couple 875 boards that way with my finger on the core, just to see how hot they get  Wouldn't do it for extended amounts of time, but just to see if you get POST should be fine..

LOL, I would hope someone realizes that and has enough common sense, but yeah for those that lack common sense, what he said...

Staying a blow dryer on the same spot can be dangerous, but I doubt that it whould have caused that problem.
I think that boasist used something as isopropilyc 70%.... Which can conducduct....

I suggest using isopropyl, atleast i think that's what it's called in english. PRF sells that stuff as PRF CONTACT CLEANER.
