View Full Version : Am I the only one disappointed with Doom 3 ?

After more than 1 year of anticipation, and a few product delays, I feel really let down. The graphics in D3 are quite impressive... No one an argue that.
My problem with the game is that it's just boring. The story line is an almost complete ripoff of half life
(from the entance into the "research facility" to the "shady govt types" to the "accident" that triggers some hideos shiz from another plane to enter ours) ... LOL, not an original thought there at all...
On top of all that, if you take out the predicatble monsters that are waiting in the dark corners to pop out behind you after you pass, it's not exiting at all... Knowing those guys are there, you can simply empty a shotun blast , blindly into every dark corner and take them out.
Throw all that together with 4 years of developent, and there still is no multiplayer ??? WTF ?
Its like they spent 3 years 11 months on graphics, and 1 month (if that) on the actual game.... I hope Half Life 2 delivers, this one is a bore.

Hello? Are you aware that this story was created 10-15 years ago?
Half-Life? Sure it was a great game but you can't be saying ID copied it? :stick:

Heh, I had to laugh a little when I read the OP. Doom was released in 1993 with the same story as Doom3. Heck, even Doom 2 was released before Half-Life came out in 1998. I'm guessing you just haven't ever played Doom1/2?
I suppose it's just like the Coke-Pepsi thing. In some countries, Pepsi was distributed and gained a market hold before Coke (I believe Russia was one country). Some Russian figurehead was like, "WTF is this Coke stuff, it is just copying Pepsi". Whereas in countries where the opposite happened, I suppose people say the opposite as well.

OK ... points taken. :D
My real gripe here , is that nothing is new here... I did play D1 and D2, and although the backgrounds may be the same, the way the game plays out is like HL 2.
D3 just seems like a beautiful, but empty game.

its ok. I like it. But they should of worked on putting some variety in the game. All too much of the same surroundings.

yup .... ID seems to have that issue with similar scenes....
Q1 was the greenest/brownest game ever made.
Q2 was the orangest/brownest game ever made
Q3 was the reddest/brownest game ever made.
D3 seems to be the silver pipest game ever made LOL ;)

Same here. I've been pretty happy with the game overall as well. I seem to be one of the few that doesn't mind the flashlight work. I think it adds to the overall feel. :toast:

I think the game is terrible. The first twenty minutes or so are scary, but then it just gets totally boring. To make things worse, the game is very predictable & there is little variaty to it. If it didn't have good graphics, the game would be garbage.
Its pretty cool... I love games when you can just go around and enjoy the grafics... But hey if you are anoyed my the flashlight thing then look here: www.doom3hq.net
There is a ducttape mod where u tie the flashlight on you gun with ducttape...
I think the game is ok... Its kinda fun... But heck to my anticipatians then this game sux ass... There isnt even any real environment... All you can move is boxes and chairs?? If you shoot a LCD screen nuthin happens...
And the thing with doom1 and doom2 is like doom3... Not at all...
D3 is ALOT like HL1 in the story... Like #0 said... The arrival... The accident... The wierd corporate guy running around???
It would've been nice if they also had added some more NEW monsters in the game... All you see is the same as in doom2... Very doom1/2 environment... But they still got away with alot of cheap crap... kinda sux...
I think HL2 will be MUCH better...
Gameplay is #1 then grafics... Every1 knows this... Grafics get boring and old... Gameplay just lasts ;o)
This is after all not a woman... Its a game ;)

to really get the experience of doom 3 is to turn the lights off and crank your 5.1 sound up. if you dont have 5.1 sound you really missing alot of the game.

got it, done it... Still disappointed.
Although I do admit, the graphics, and sound are both done extremely well.

Its set on Mars, of course there are no women in it. Maybe if they did one on Venus then it would be all women. ;)

i dont think the game is terible, i like playing it, but it gets boring real quick as its endlessly repeating almost the same scenes over and over and over and over again...

Doom 3 is basically a rework of the other dooms but with better graphics and sound.
Its very Linear, and eventually the monsters appearances become very predictable.
The Shadows and Lighting are implemented very well, but since the shadows are ever prevalent, most of the "eye candy" is hidden.
The game is generally scary if played in a darkened room with a good surround sound system, but play it in daylight with 2 speakers and it stops being scary and becomes repetitive and boring.
Of course many people will see past these faults and say its the best game out, but for me and many others the best game out is Farcry, its much less Linear, the playing maps are varied and expansive, And the Graphics are still as good as Doom3, If not better.
The one thing I really loved in Doom3 though, were the spider bots, those things were so cool and moved around their enviroment very convincingly.
I must admit to being quite sad, when the first bot got "toasted" by 2 imps.
The bot seemed to have the personality of some faithful dog, running ahead to scout and then coming back to check where you were when you stopped to admire the scenery or search for ammo, etc.
