you can get a 2.4c for less then $160 at newegg, if your really goin budget.

either of the first two motherboards there have proven themselves over and over again(dunno much on the 3rd), so either one will do good. but neither is really "budget" as they are priced around $160-180, so it depends really on how much your friend has to spend.

for memory, you MIGHT want to get some pc4x00 for high 1:1, even if latencies arent the best. or else, just plan on running your ram on a divider, and get something that can do 240mhz. OCZ EB isnt exactly budget ram, unless you just get pc3500 2x256mb. not sure if you ment the EB, as theres other suitable OCZ ram.

I would go for the Abit IC7 Max3, slightly stronger than the P4C800 at the same speed. The DFI Lanparty is also a good choice and is more novice oc friendly than the first two. It has nice features like being able to save working bios settings is a plus for those who want to test all the settings for maximum performance.

Memory right now is a mixed bag now that BH5 is gone.

Check other memory threads to see whats the best going, I have hand picked stuff myself.

Giel seems to be having problems delivering DDR that reaches speed and can run at default timing. just check their forums.

OCZ is safe choice and the EB line is back in production and available from retailers.

Corsair has a low latency line that should work good on the IC7

Centon Advanced DDR with Hynix D5 will run at 2.5-2-2-5 turbo ~ 250FSB. I need to test the Samsung TCCD more. TCCC is found everywhere too.

Kingston is also a safe choice, I have not tested any of the high end stuff with tight timings.

Adata is also producing high speed modules.

Timing is more important than Mhz for the FSB you will be able to hit. Look for lowest timing.

A 2.8c or 3.0c on a budget and good overclockers.

You will want memory that will run tight timings.

Im in the same situation picking a mobo, Ive been looknig at the IC7 Max 3 but I heard that it needed a vtt to work good for a higher overclock.

I plan to use a 2.4C first then a 2.8E onto a 3.2E...after that, who knows.

P4C800-E Dlx was my first P4 mobo and still is today. But it is no good for big overclocks (in the 4GhZ+ range) without mods. So I would say the Abit IC7 Max3. As for memory, 2x 256mb PC3500 EB sounds pretty good. 2.8c or 3.0c as FUGGER said.

i never realy owend p4 cpu's so im wondering how can i check if a cpu is stepping 2.8c or 2.8e ? (the c stepping is the norhtwood processor? and the e stepping prescott?)

the abit ic7 max 3 sound like a good choice :) probely take that one whit some 2 x 256 MB 3700 EB from ocz. or better to take 1 x 512 mb for now and buy a second one later on? (but then no duel channel till he buys a second 512 MB chip)

C's are 130nm, have 512 cache and 800 FSB

E's are 90nm, have 1meg cache and 800 FSB

I wouldn't recommend buying 256 sticks, they are rapidly becoming old tech. But then again not running dual channel will cripple your systems memory bandwidth. I recommend buying 2x512 sticks of affordable (but good quality) ram over 1x512 or 2x256 of expensive ram.

E's are also prescotts and get extremely hot.
