Well...after waiting nearly a month for my XT PE, I finally cancelled it after finding out it had been backordered to August 31st. So I went ahead and ordered a nice Gainward "Golden Sample" 6800 GT for cheap.
I've heard great things about the GT's, and I was wondering how high they can go on upgraded air and volt mods? I was thinking about maybe soldering on a second power connector. Is this possible? Would it acheive a similar effect to having two stock like an Ultra?
Thanks, the card should be coming in Saturday or Monday at the latest. Sorry if this is posted in the wrong place, just figured it had something to do with ocing. ;)

I just got my PNY 6800 GT, and right now im running stable at 427/1160 with the stock cooler and volts.
Does the Gainward "GS" come at higher frequencies or something?

It comes stock at 400/550, same as Ultra. It has the ram to get it to 1.2ghz though easy, that's really what makes it Golden Sample. ;)

1.6ns? rated for 1250mhz? ;) probably hit 1.3-1.35 with ease as well.
hmm, doesnt that make a 6800gt GS esentially a 6800ultra? same pipes, same clocks... is it cheaper? where did you buy it?

Only difference I see is that it only has one power connector. So unless your PSU is quality, you have a higher risk of burning the cables on the feed molex than with an Ultra.
Then again, If you're spending 450$ on a video card you damn well better have a quality PSU. :)
Gainward 6800Gt GS are in stock at Zipzoomfly for $450. Is that what you bought?

the zzf.com one is 2.0ns ram, so i dont think so.

The Gainward "GS" 6800GT has 2.0ns RAM.
Period.

The Ultra has 1.6ns and two power connectors = better overclocks.
But yea, it has same clocks as the Ultra stock...you essentially get an Ultra right out of the box... :bounces:

I bought it at http://www.buyxg.com/ for $428. Sweet deal.
I really hope it'll clock like crazy. ;)
Has anyone tried the mod I suggested in my first post about soldering on the second power connector? Is it possible?

Be very wary of those guys. I bought a 420watt psu(actually 2 of them) from them months ago. They advertised it as being "made by channel well". I got it, checked the UL listing, and it was actually a 250watt psu made by some really crappy manufacturer (RealPower if I recall). I emailed them and told them about their mistake, linked them to the UL listing that proved the PSU was not CWT as they were selling it. They told me that their distributer said it was Channel Well so they couldn't be held accountable even if they knew they were advertising falsely. I emailed again asking for an RMA number and saying I expected the restocking fee waived. They never replied back. They are still selling that PSU as "Made by Channel Well" to this day.
By the way, It's 2.0ns not 1.6.

Yea my bad, but the memory is clocked at 1.1 already, same as ultra...so I would think it would oc better than other gt's at 1.0.

A little update... my friend Sean (known as dojo_warlord here) linked me to the card I just bought. It had a new back order date of 8/20! I was like...what the hell? So I called them up and cancelled my order. By the way, they aren't exactly friendly to deal with...the last time I buy from them.
Anyway, I headed over to Zip Zoom Fly and picked up the same card for $450 w/ Free UPS 2nd Day! And atleast now I know I won't be screwed. ;)

Do you guys really belive in the jazzed up versions of the mid/upper mid pricerange? Do they work better or is saving a lil cash and buying the top end card a better answer?

The golden sample comes clocked stock at Ultra clock speeds. So you already have an advantage as they basically cherry pick the core and ram for you. Plus it comes with a better cooler than any of the other GT's, which also contributes to a higher oc. :)
