the background and levels look like crap though!

except for that one level wich looks like an old castle, the one they showed at e3.

i hope they dont forget that a game needs a STORY!!!! and come up with something better than the doom3 story.

about the pics... im sure you can get the same detail with the doom3 engine today... carmack etc just chose to use way less polygons and quality so everybody can play doom3, even on a slow 4ss rig.... a big mistake if u ask me.

doom3 runs on a xbox1... that pretty much describes the lameness of id... how can you reduce the quality settings of a game so much it even runs on a 2 year old console wich is based on 3 year old pc hardware :shakes:

and they didint even integrate a really high quality setting, at max details the textures look like the medium details of other games...

and did you note that almost nobody in doom3 has hair? theyre all bald! reason? performence...

and there are 2 maybe 3 diferent zomby models! all the yombies look the same! and there are like 10 different enemies in d3, wth is that? on far cry every enemy has a different face iirc, THATS what i want to see!

Those screens scanned from a magazine look really bad. The others are nice though.

People need to take that into account if they think that the colors are screwed up or the textures are blurry.

amazing how far PC games have come in the last year.
those are some beautiful screen shots.

not everyone playing doom3 has an x800xt or 6800u although I do agree they should have an ultra quality option to make it much more detailed and of course add hair like in farcry! Maybe they had to scale doom3 down cause then even the 6800 or x800s wouldnt be able to run 1600x1200 "max" quality

you can't always dumb down games to fit aging hardware, if you do, the market stagnates with games that barely push the envelope.

if you have a game that can't play these kinda games, don't try.
don't cry that they should makes games worse, just to fit old cards...

yeah but thats not the point!

you dont write a game so it can be played in 1600x1200 and all eye candy settings maxxed out when its released...

thats just plain stupid.

remember q3! when it came out everybody had problems running it at a decent frame rate, even the latest hardware couldnt run it in 1600x1200 and max details + eye candy BY FAR!!!

the idear is to release a new game that everybody plays at low/med res and details, then the next generation of hardware will let people play it in high res and high detail.

if you release a game like this its almost like you release 2 games. the game lives longer and is more successfull, as everybody who played it in low/med detail has a lot of fun playing it once again at even higher details.

releasing doom3 the way they did now was just plain stupid. the idear is not to design games for the hardware we have but to design games that FORCE the hardware to evolve even more!

q3 did an excellent job in that, doom3 doesnt look like that at all. theres barely something really new in doom3.

soround sound, good, but not really new
more shaddows, good, but new at all
bump mapping, good, but not new at all, actually very old already.
pixel shaders, good, but not new either

the only new thing i can remember in doom3 is the way they integrated 2d interfaces...

doom3 lacks 2 important things a modern game NEEDS:

good AI and team AI
realistic physics engine

far cry half life2 thief3 and stalker and unreal3 all feature those important engine parts doom3 lacks wich is why i dont think the doom3 engine will be as successfull as the q3 engine.

after all doom3 is just q3+bump mapping and normal maps everywhere+improved shaders sound and shaddows.

IMPROVED... its not new!

Doom 3 also lacks vehicle code.

Anyone who has played it all way through able to confirm that?

you got a good point. however maybe the doom3 engine is flexiable that you can make some really intensive games with it. I do remember the quake3 thing, it was the reason I upgraded my packard hell. even though it was oced to 233MHz, the mobo and ram musta been real crap, I was getting like 10fps no matter what res I ran. Others with pentium2's at 233MHz were getting like 20-25. I upgraded to a 366 celeron at 550MHz a few months later and finally quake3 flew at 800x600x16 bit color with 55fps in timedemo backed by a tnt pci LOL. so what should they have made doom3 for? like min requirements is a ti4600 or 9600pro, xp2500 barton or 2.4c pentium4 and x800s do 1280x960 medium details, ti4600 640x480 lowest details? wont alot of people not buy the game rather than upgrade

psssshhhhh......probably won't be available for another year or two.

But the D3 gameplay, I find it to be stuck in a tight environment, and lack of outdoor environment. (except for the 30 seconds u spend between airlocks)

Also check this (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=35865) if you haven't already for some more UE3 info.

Sweet screenies!

The only thing I don't like about graphical engines that push the envelope is that competitive multiplayers becomes impossible unless you turn down your settings all the way. But that's a minor issue, I say keep pushing.

Get some AA on that flamingo!

Sorry, but the rendering time would have taken a couple for days if I had AAed it so I hoped no one would notice the edges.

anyone who isn't impressed the slightest bit by these screenies is a complete moron. Unless they can come up with something better, they should be quiet and give some credit to the designers of this stuff.

Actually, Legends, the team responsable for unreal 2, and unreal 2 xmp has been disbanded/shutdown. Unreal 3 appears to be being made by Epic themselves.

OMFG OMFG

This is just awesome looking.

Only complaint is the specular and reflection mapping is set way to high and causes washout on some of the pics.
