DooM III fixes/performance update looks like :)
Aren't the 4.9's suppose to have OGL totally rewritten also?
Atleast that's what i thought i read somewhere...

I'm gonna download em and install em when I know what performance gain I will achieve. Although, I need new drivers cos I have the new DirectX9c installed and that requires pixelshader 2b drivers for ati cards.

*bump*
Has anyone tested these yet with DirectX9c? Or done a bench? I wanna know if it is worth getting these or just the final 4.8s. I suppose these will be better since I have got Doom III.

Yes ATI are working on the Doom3 issues.
ATI Releases "4.9 BETA" Doom III Optimized Catalysts
ATI have been working very hard at optimizing their OpenGL driver code since recent benchmarks indicated nVidia's cards to be the superior choice for new blockbuster, Doom III. Although the official 4.8 Catalysts are still due to be released, ATI are planning to finalise a significantly more optimized OpenGL version by the time the official 4.9's hit in early to mid september, which should help level the platform between the two gfx giants. In the meantime, work in progess looks to be going quite well, with an early BETA release being dished out that already gives ATI users (particularly of the new-gen x800 range) a noticable performance improvement for Doom3. If you've been blasting away with this kickass new title and you're running ATI, try these out! If interested, there's also a discussion on these over at Rage3D.
Oh, and it's also been mentioned that Instancing support has been added within these too, something that Far Cry's 1.2 patch took advantage of. Now, if only UBISoft would hurry up and re-release a more stable version of it.
“The Catalyst 4.9 beta drivers are a sneak peak into future drivers that ATI is continuously working on. They were released mainly for the OpenGL component update, targeting improved Doom3 performance. Having said that, newer generations of hardware will get the most benefit from this driver (X800* series). While I haven’t done specific benchmarks, X800 users can see performance increase of 5~30%, depending on the level and the system/hardware type. Regretfully, older hardware, such as 9700’s and even 9800’s will not get as much benefit. And if paired with a slower system (or with less memory) might see +/- performance improvements.
We are working very hard to get future drivers out that will add quite a bit to the performance of these.
Remember that these are Beta drivers, and so are unsupported. If you want stability and good speed, please stick with the release drivers. Cat 4.8 has not been skipped, and should arrive soon.”

natures down alittle, but Dragothic seems to get a very nice boost, and everything is gets a smaller boost as well.
not bad for a comparison between 4.7 and 4.9, thanks :D

I have just installed the 4.9s to compliment DirectX9c and guess what: my 3dmark03 is lower than my Dx9b/Cat4.3 and 6 scores. BUT, I see that people testing 01 are getting improved scores so I will test that soon. I have yet to test them on the x800 since I have had the 9800 in there all night and am too tired to fiddle around.

I think ATI said that performance would be ~ the same or worse with the 4.9's and a R3X0 core.

I get about 5-10fps better in Doom 3 even when set to Ultra Details 1024x768 x6AA/x8AF

You know Ultra Details is designed to use 512MB video memory on your card ? Since no cards have 512MB, I think High Details is the most you want to use (256MB). Otherwise you're just slowing it down a lot, and really I don't think there is a noticeable visual difference.

OOH! Come on ATi, bring on the 512mb cards!

Looks like I'll have to do another benching run :D
Heres my test results:
A64 3400+ @ 2970 (11x270)
X800Pro with 16 pipes @ 610/610
CAT4.5 CAT4.8 BETA CAT4.9 BETA
CAR 466.9 / 147.8 483.3 / 147.9 487.1 / 148.2
DRAGO 662.8 / 342.3 671.4 / 342.6 672.5 / 345.8
LOBBY 406.7 / 182.9 414.0 / 186.1 414.3 / 186.5
NAT 297.7 291.5 291.9
--------------------------------------------------------
TOTAL 34781 35047 35186
The cat 4.5 run had a bad car low, it normally hits around 475 at these clock speeds but still that doesnt come close to what the 4.8's or 4.9's offer.
Shame nature is down so much, but who am I to complain about a free points :D

So, do these work better (WinXP / Cat 4.9b) than Win2K/Cat 3.2s ?

Nice comparison :)
how much of a point jump do you think a 9800XT will see from dx9b cat 3.10 to dx9c with the 4.9? (the same 400 points???)
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=7644765
400-500 points wouldn't hurt me ;) (will help in my goal to 23k ;))

dont think youll gain that much with a cpu limitation, maybe more like 200 points.
http://www.imagemagician.org/images/acemann/abouteven.bmp
However if you can clock your cpu up I can see 22k happening for you. my 9800 pro sucks so bad its at stock now so this is killing my nature, I am gonna upgrade to a 9700 thatll probably beat this 9800p LOL
