View Full Version : We are going to beat 2cpu
DDTUNG
10-19-2002, 02:07 AM
The latest statsman update shows 2cpu outfolding us by slightly over 200 points a day, down from almost 400 points a day a while back. The difference is mostly due to our increase in production.
Noskillz is going to add 70G of computing power on Monday, which I reckon is worth 150-250 points a day depending on whether he is able to run 24/7. I will be adding 10 more P4@3G rigs in the next week to ten days, and that's going to add 140 points a day. If we include additional contributions by other members, we'll be outfolding 2cpu by a comfortable margin in a couple of weeks.
So teammates, keep your chins up and take a few punches in the first couple of rounds. Team Xtreme WILL PREVAIL.:D

One cpu can make all the difference between winning and losing! Every effort put forth no matter how small makes a difference! If we adopt an attitude that one cpu doesn't matter, we have defeated ourselves. Thanks for going that 1 step extra ExtremeAMD, that's the attitude that is going to take us all the way to the top!:D

From what I've seen, it's all about active members, get everyone folding and you'll do brilliantly(look at how low the active members list are of OCAU etc)

Maybe you should work on a Quiet PC project so ppl can leave their PC folding overnight :)
It's also worth bringing any machines you have lying around online(I've got 3 x P2 400 Dualies and another should be finished before the end of this month, they take about 3 or 4 days for a single WU, but it will all count..I'm sure ppl in your team have good ol' Pentiums they could leave on in a cupboard.

While Hotmail works in spurts, 2cpu is very steady in production. The only way we can beat them is to increase our own production.
BTW we just passed them, with a little help from my friend CHUNG.:D

Proud to see my name climbing slowly up the Team Statistics page... but this leads me to beleive a lot have stopped folding... some ppls WU count hasn't changed in over a week... :(
Unforutnately we've been a PC down at this end (I sold it) so need to get a few more built and on display... the more PCs we have built in stock, the more will be folding away... got another built and back online so there are 3 folding from Over-Clock UK HQ, and 2 of mine folding from home...
Gonna draw up a permission sheet for customers so we can leave the systems folding once they've been sold, but this will only be done with the customers express permission and the pros and cons of having it running will be explained to them. I did something similar a long time ago with SETI, and not a single customer complained, they all thought it was an excellent idea and were willing to do anything to support it...

Marci, I've been doing the same thing. Most of the ones I build are for friends, so I've just been discussing it with them and letting them make up their own minds. The last one I did, he said to leave it on there, but he has 28.8k modem:rolleyes: And no idea how to setup auto dial in. If he didn't live 100 miles away from me, I'd go set it up, but he's on his own;)

The P4 will get gromacs as long as they are being given out at stanford. The amd will get what it normally gets the shortcut does not work for amd.

First Post,
First of all hello everyone!
Secondly I have added a P4 2.4@2.6 (still working this upwards) and a P4 1.5@stock, later in the week I will be able to add two XP2000+ machines once the last couple of parts arrive and then hopefully in the next fortnight or so a 2400+ if I can get my hands on one.
Unfortunately none of them can be 24/7 just yet but I am working on it. I will also try to add a few more P4 1.5 machines from work (I am the head of IT so no permission problems :D ) but these will only run about 8-9 hours a day, still it all adds up.

Welcome to the team! & Welcome to Xtreme!!! :)
8-9 hours a day will get some points turned in, but if you don't mind me asking, why do you turn it off and on??? It's a proven fact that the worst thing you can do to a mobo and cpu is turning it off and on. The heat buildup and dissapation can cause stress cracks etc... A setup that is left running 24/7 stays at relatively the same temps constantly, therefore reducing the expansion and contraction of the components. Just a couple 2c's;)

The 1.5s are desktop machines at work and they insist that all equipment not in use is shutdown overnight (and I don't think they would accept the argument that leaving them to fold is a proper use!).
The other machines are or will be based at my home and as soon as I quieten them down a bit I will be able to leave them on 24/7, at the moment they are running 16-17 hours a day.

Since you will be turning off your machines daily, make sure you use the -forceasm flag as well. Otherwise the shutdown may cause the assembly optimizations to be turned off and you will be folding 3 times slower upon restart.

Man, after reading some posts in this forum it makes me realize my dual AMD MP 1900 setup is slow. :) I mainly do modeling and rendering in Maya though... so it's fine enough for me. It just happens to fold well, too. That and the 9GHz or so I have running in other places really help. ;)
