View Full Version : Athlon64 Questions

Trying to catch up to the times since most of the stuff I know is about athlon XPs. First I was wondering about mobile A64s like http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-445&depa=0. Are they the same as mobile XPs that run cooler due to lower voltages and overclock more?
Also, I was wondering which is the best motherboard to get for these new chips for overclocking? I would rather get one that didnt require a lot of modding. I don't have the balls to do things like that yet...wouldnt have the money to replace it if I screwed it up.
The sledgehammer has a different socket number than the clawhammer...that means a different motherboard correct? And the foodchain goes Newcastle > Clawhammer > Sledgehammer in terms of overclocking right? Sorry if these questions seem n00bish...but this is the only forum that I would trust suggestions from.

ClawHammer / SledgeHammer >> NewCastle

Meaning clawhammer and sledgehammer are better than newcastle? That was what I was trying to depict...

The newcastles will most often achive a higher OC but the more cache on the clawhammers make it faster.

You need about 125 - 200 mhz on the newcastle to make up the for the difference of having only 512kb cache vs the clawhammer 1mb cache

What about which motherboards to get and which to avoid? As well as the mobile A64s?

The 754 board to get now is the Epox 8KDA#, But it doesn't have FireWire and Mobile support  if you're planning to use a mobile get GigaByte's K8NS. Stay away from the MSI ones! BTW I think you should wait for DFI one like the most of us :)

For a MB I got a KV8 Pro and revision 1.1 does have a working AGP/PCI lock and you have plenty of vcore 1.85V which is plenty for a nice overclock without doing vmods to the board. You can get them at NewEgg for $105 with free shipping.

But the Vdimm is reduced to 2.8V (max) for the lastest BIOS, if you use OLD Guru you can still set it to 3.2V, but you may find the Vtt problem, drops to 1.3xV, say, at and above 2.9V Vdimm, I can only stablize my RAM at around 3.05V~3.1V only !

That is still true with the Vtt problems but now theres mods out. I got my board to do a stable 280FSB, 290FSb had random restarts.

Why should he stay away from the MSI? I thought it was the best overclocker around for the socket 754?

No the MSI MB just doesnt work with A64 Mobile chips.

Ohh okey, I thought it did. Well anyway, wich CPU is the best overklocker? The AMD64 3000+ Mobile or the AMD64 3000+ Newcastle?
I'm thinking of cooling my system with water (both CPU and chipset), wich Mobo and CPU should I get?
I'm thinking of buying OCZ EL PC4400 just to make sure the memory won't stop my OC.

Well if I thought overclocking was safe I'd go with the 3000+ mobile they can overclock really high from what ive heard a 2800+ mobile @ 2.6ghz the only problem with the chip is there all OEM which means no warrenty. Ive sent back chips twice already for frying them and the warrenties got honored so I think retail is a safer bet.

Hmm, 2800+ @ 2.6 that's very good.
But the newcastle is able to OC that high (and even higher) also.
So the Newcastle would be the best choice you think?
