hey guys. recently jumped ship... uh.. joined up... fresh from max oc, but it's time to move on.. i guess this is where i'll be for a while.. and for the record.. i'm still a noob.

so i'm looking at a p4 rig, basically for gaming. aircooled.

i was going for the 2.4c and a P4C800-E deluxe, but i heard that the newer 2.4's aren't as good oc'ers as the older ones. the 2.8c is now my current choice as it's 2 bucks more than the 2.4c. any comments on that?

rest of the system is:
- 2x512MB OCZ EL pc4000
- Sapphire X800 256MB
- 2x80g 7200rpm maxtor sata's
- some other fanciful items like a dvd+-rw, aluminum case, 430w antec truepower, sp-94

main questions being:
- is the 2.8c a decent overclocker? at least comparable to the 2.4?
- is this enough backing for the X800?

thanks.. and any suggestions will be mich appreciated...

welcome to XS Noreturn,

I'd say 2.8c fits minimum requirements for gaming and x800/6800gt video cards. However, if money permits. Go for at least a 3.0c , then you will be comfortably over the requirements. And overclocking is not necessary.

3.0c seems a favorite for intel'ers. I'm not sure whether that is because they fall into a really nice FSB range (240-280... 1:1 Bh5 on reasonable voltage-1:1 on extreme voltage or 5:4 on low voltage), or if it's because they overclock better than 2.8's and below (as I tend to suspect from people's interest in them).

I just bought a 2.8C, because I got it more than 50$ cheaper than a 3.0C would have cost me. So I will let you know how it clocks, hopefully early next week. Maybe someone else more familiar with current p4's can help you more?

I thought you were overclocking your 3.0 now Kanavit.

kanavit doesnt overclock, from what i know of him.

his upgrade path:

2.4b -> 2.8b -> 3.0e

i think... i doubt he ran any of them other then stock speeds.

Yea that setup looks good, and for the burner get this ALLFORMATS dvd-rw by LG - it even does dual layer and DVD-RAM - http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-136-035&depa=0.
PS: dont forget a good cooling solution, and get a 6800GT, they are less expensive and perform better. Go to evga.com and they have the 6800GT for 400 bucks opposed to 440+ at newegg for a x800 pro

Unless he gets a vivo that mods to xt... then he can beat the GT.

I would go for the 3.0C. Quite possible to see 3.8Ghz+ on an air OC and you get the 15x multiplier which is a great number...like 250FSB (1:1 possibility with good BH-5) give 3.75Ghz. Very do-able. Make sure you get a good OCing board, I suggest Abit or Asus. BTW, I didn't know you could even find a 2.4C anymore. That was a year ago that the 2.4C @ 3.6Ghz craze was happening. Long gone.

why not? newegg has had 2.4c for ever now. the price is 149/169 atleast the last time i looked. anyways i would vote 3.0c too. the one i bought ran 3980mhz on air and aound 4200 under the mach1. ive also considered the 2.8c but just havent found the right deal yet. eitherway man 2.8c 3.0c youl be just fine. oc's should be close and who knows? you may even get a good stepping 2.8c and hit the same 4gigs the 3.0c has been known to reach... good luck man.

peace perc,

Get a 30 cap 3.0C and a P4C 800e Deluxe. I just picked one up from a local shop and it eats my 3.2c for lunch. High OC on low Vcore. I'm using a VapoChill LS but have hit 4.3 for Aquamark and some other not so taxing benches. I haven't taken the time to nail down where it switches but I'm running stock vcore and 250fsb
