Assuming i can get 2.7ghz on air on a 3500+ (let me know if this is high/low) would i see a nice gain (3dm 01, etc) upgrading from my current C0 clawhammer setup (252x10 2-2-2)? Is it even worth upgrading or should i just crank up some voltages (at 3.18 and 1.68 presently) and keep the 754 power going?

crank up the volts 'till you kill it, then buy a 939 setup

what cooling do you expect to be using?

2.7 shouldnt be hard on top shelf aircooling like that, as long as ambient temps are not to high. Mine does 2.6 on the boxed cooler with 60F ambient temps. As for if it will score better or not it should but im not sure how much. S939 newcastles take a beating by the hands of clawhammers in drag low/car low.

I think dual-channel on 939 will give you like 5% increase in performance, and the extra 200Mhz will show a fair amount of performance increase also.
I'd say play around with higher voltage first and see what it brings. But if you have the money to blow, I certainly don't mind seeing more S939 OCing results. :D

there“s a thread about it here: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=38982
And yes that would give you a small performance boost I guess.

assuming that's a 1MB L2 clawhammer 754 I don't think you'll gain much if anything moving over
Sure some games like Q3 will run better, but do you need 500fps vs 450 lol.
I think for the most part, your going to need 200+mhz difference to be even, and more to pull ahead. To get 2.7ghz on that 3500+ I think you'll need water cooling. Just trying to stop you from making a mistake.
but if you do decide to go 939 pm me I might be interested in that cpu :)

I think you should save your money and wait for 90nm to be out. You may gain another 1000 to 1500 marks more if you can run 1:1 with your ram. 260x10 on the 3500+ should be good for 32k and reasonable with a good 3500+ chip but is it worth $600 for cpu and mobo plus more $ for two sticks of bh5 just for another 1k marks? I could easily break 19k with a clawhammer at 250x10 no questions about it. Not so sure about 19k if its a newcastle. Even I dont really feel its worth spending $350 for a 3400+ clawhammer just to break 19k with my ti4200, I will just wait for 90nm to come out then I should have like 21k and youll have like 35k plus! we both have fine cpus, sit tight a few more months. I looked at amd's roadmap again. Ok unless AMD changes plans again, their winchester and san diago, both 2.6GHz on 90nm should be out in October. This is 3 months from now max. If you buy s939 and 3500+ now, itll be "outdated" in no time then youll have to sell that for half of what you paid in order to get 4000+ or fx55 and a new s939 mobo thats compatable with the 90nm a64s. I thought there would be a 130nm fx55 but I guess AMD determined their yields would be too low for anything over 2.4GHz on 130nm. The fact many cant even hit 2.6GHz on their fx53 is proof. Those that can have high end air or even water and using more than 1.5v, try 1.65+ v. Also the good news is that 3GHz for 90nm is on amd's roadmap for the immediate months to come, so I expect that 3GHz shouldnt be much of a prob for 90nm, even on air it should be doable. Thats only 400MHz oc from 2.6GHz. We should easily see over 40k marks by then with you hitting 35k to 37k with an fx55 all air cooled! Now that is something you can smile at :D even I would really be tempted, I should have around 22k with my ti4200 and 250x12 on that fx55 using OCz 3700eb or maybe corsair 3200XL. I may not have the $ for a fx55 so even a 4000+ should still get me over 21k, perhaps 21.5k

i think maybe i'll pick up the DFI 754 board when it's released and maybe an OCZ DDR booster...
270x10 1:1 ? :D

That is what I am going to do as well.

Anyone know the ETA of the DFI board?

put a pair of 60's on top of the 948, much better airflow patterns ;)

270x10 1:1 ? :D
might be possible if you dont kill anything, esp the a64 ondie controller at such high volts  good luck anyway
