View Full Version : Burning Smell... Am I going too far?
Hi,
This is really annoying, When I overclock my mobile to 2800Mhz using 2.1 Vcore (2.0V effectively) My TTGI 350W starts to smell really bad, (burning smell). I have the 3.3V rail mod@3.5V and the 5/12V tweaked to 5.1/12.1V. I don´t think those voltages are high enough to cause this. Should I leave this sucker burn to death? I´m afraid to kill more than just the PSU, maybe this smell is just a " BURN IN" that would stop after while? What should I do?

I say give it hell, just make sure u are in front of ur rig when is @FL to make sure nothing will go wrong (on ur mobo).
Yes... a power supply can kill more than just itself when it dies. If you want to gamble... that's up to you but just know what you can loose.
Fortron Source power supplies are good and cheap. I have used a 350w FS to power a few of my mobiles to over 3GHz 24/7 full-load.

I´m the mercyless piece of s*hit is this world when It come to kill crap products, but I will definitely not risk to kill my beloved mobile or the NF7-S. Should I remove the PSU right now and put a bullet on it? :D
PS: Have you guys hear/had something like that before?
Thanks for link Jeff.

I wouldnt gamble on it. Do like jeff said and invenst in a fortron :) cheeaap and gooood :D
Oh I forgot to say that the 12V rail goes to 10.7V while priming....(sorry, 10.4 was a typo)
Cow2kie,
Nice clock you got there, is it prommy cooled? I just started to mess with my Chilled mobile last night, and still testing. What Vcore you´re using btw?

 That's a bit low and I'll bet that's part of the burn smell. Is your ATX plug starting to discolor? Just curious as the last time I thought a power supply was burning up it was really a poor connection on the ATX plug... basically it wasn't make a good connection and it toasted a few pins. Check it out. Maybe try plugging and unplugging it a few times just to make sure it has good contact. Then check your full-load 12v line and see if it's any higher.
Good luck. :toast:

You missed out on directron's $15 450w superflower PSU a few days ago. I bought one, can't beat $21 for a 450 watt with 4 fans and supposedly full pots :D

Nono... for someone with the demands of performance like Kode has indicated... You've gotta go with the fortron 530.
I´m a little short on cash right now fellas. Looks like I´ll have to stick with my mobile at 2GHz for a while.
Just checked the ATX connection and re-opened the PSU to crank the 5/12V rails up. Now the 5V is @ 5,21 and the 12V @ 11.20 while Priming. Is it safe to run at those voltages?

your rails are all over the place. that thing could take out all your hardware, get the fortron 350w like jeff said, i wouldnt risk all ur hardware

Yep....PSU is a damn good investment.....well at least for now before BTX comes out and we have to mod our ATX PSU.

Ya its prommy cooled. Im using 2v. I can't use any higher.

Check the voltage at a molex with a multimeter at idle and load. If you went from 10load to 12load you might be pushing 14v at idle, which is pretty bad (and most quality PSU's would shut off at that point).

PM me... I bought a couple of those Directron $15 450w superflower PSUs this week and I really don't need them. They cost me $18 per power supply including delivery so I could probably let you have one for $22 delivered if you're in the US(the extra $4 is just for shipping). According to UPS I should have them Wednesday.
BTW... personally... I wouldn't run with the 12v line at 11.2v. You are just asking for trouble. I'd turn your overclock down until your unloaded 12v line is under 13v and your fully-loaded 12v line stays above 11.8v. No need to press your luck when you're down on cash. ;)

This is what you need....slightly overkill, but overkill is good:)

:D
Absolutely bulletproof power supply and incredibly flexible too...it'll run basically board out there and power any number of peripherals.
Running 9 hard drives (8x10k drives and 1x15k), my P4EE@3728MHz, a Radeon XT and all my cards off of it with no problems at all...and it's just slightly warm to the touch. One of those buy-and-forget type of computer parts.
It's not exactly cheap, but you get what you pay for. The power supply is most important part of a computer (you're trusting it with all your expensive hardware), and a good one will save you tons of potential grief.
My $0.02...;)

lutjens = macrohard ?
I'd go with the enermax up there if you have money, or the Fortron 530w if not. It's a rock solid PSU.
One PSU I had smelled burnt and it shut down the whole system, smelled of smoke, and there was a burn mark on the motherboard after I checked it. :D I'd definitely get rid of the PSU before it kills something...
But then again, it gave me a good reason to move to a NF7-S from a Gigabyte VIA KT333 board ;)

dont do it unless your willing to fry hardware! I encountered instability when my 12v dropped below 11.5 back on my old xp2000 then finally I killed my 350w psu. lucky it didnt take out anything else

crunching the numbers on that enermax PSU it comes out to 1103.4w...
yeah, right...
EDIT
I sent an email to a Max Point contact to see if I can acquire a review sample. I intend to test that 768w on the 12v rail to its fullest, and then some ;)
