I just pushed my overclock to 3.8GhZ which I have done before. Temps fine, prime95 is fine. As soon as the 1m in super pi starts, my hdd sounds like it is powering down and win2k gives a memory dumb bsod with an error anout winnt32.sys. A HDD problem?

The noise is rather like the spinup noise, but winding down rather than up. Is this just windows being an arse? This is probably the first time win2k has given me a BSOD. Hmm, if it is the HDD being crap, it is probably cos I just moved it from the HDD cage to the floppy cage (for space and airflow). Altohugh I handled it carefully.

EDIT: Sometimes it hangs for 2/3 seconds to detect the drive as well. But S.M.A.R.T doesn't detect/predict any errors.

There is generally a few possible reasons posts go unanswered...

One reason, lack of a good answer, another those that could help missed it.

A simple "Still need help" bump would probably be more inspiring.

I've had that happen a few times to me, from your description your HD is indeed spinning down. The few times it has happened to me I was always probing my system looking for the upper Extreme limits of my hardware. The same HD I use first did the same as you describe, long ago, never had any permanent effect, and has happened a few times over the last year or so. A simple reboot always brought it back, believe its just your system crashing.

I'm not sure about the slow detect, cable/jumper setting problem maybe, or if it only does it after your described problem possibly it just takes your HD that long to reinitialize after the crash.

Its really difficult to diagnose problems without having the machine....

Hmm, I started her up just now and HDD instantly detected. And I am now running at 3.9, but I have done alot of air flow work on the case since then and get much lower temps. I also have the NB hooked up to my water cooling as well with a TEC soon so that probably helped. Maybe there was a short somewhere which powered down the HDD but it is unlikely. It's fine now and I am dual priming it at 3.9 with no problems. Oooh, maybe I will reach my 4GhZ target! :D

I'm still aiming for stable 4GhZ on stock cooler.

Well hommie I have a few questions...

What kind of Power supply do you have?

You're running SATA right?
--if so... are you using a Molex or SATA power connector?

What does the BSOD tell you (error code)?

Did it take... errrr... make a memory dump?
--If so... Can you send me that mem dump?

Is the power cable that is connected to your HD connected anything else?
--if so... What is it connected to?

What do you have in your system that draws power?

(as you can tell I'm leaning towards a power issue)

Is the power cable on an extender or splitter?

Your hard drive is getting a reset command, durring pi and not prime is wierd. try a bigger psu and see if it continues. just my guess

Antec TruePower 550. Although I might order a OCZ PowerStream when I scrape some cash together. I am using the SATA power connector, not legacy molex. I think the cable is also attatched to a CD drive, not sure on that, I will have a look in my cable mess later. The highest drain device is probably my 4x delta fans attatched to my radiator. Hmm, maybe my antec is struggling. Also, FUGGER, what results are you getting with the PowerStream?

You need to re-think your wiring and check that all of the contacts are getting a good connection.

Is this a problem that is esily re-created?

I can do 3.9GhZ fine now and run super pi with no BSOD. Maybe it was a fluctuation or something random. I am gonna try 4GhZ next and hope I dont burn out everything in the process.
