Hi, I just got my new computer and my dad and I put it together but we ran into a problem.
I got an Maxtor 80GB 8mb buffer serial ata hdd with it, but we put everything together and when we start it up it does't find the hdd and the hdd led light doesn't go on either, now im not sure if there is something wrong with the drive or what but im lost here. Im pretty sure I got the hdd led in the right spot so...
And im planning on putting windows 2000 on it for now, but the drive is not coming up so im just very confused so if any of you can help, it would be nice.
The machine is:
AMD64 3200+ Newcastle core
MSI K8T800 Neo-FIRS2 mobo
Corsair XMS PC-3200 512mb
ATI Radeon 9600XT 128mb
Maxtor 80gb 8mb buffer serial ata hdd
400W Antec PSU.

is it not being recognized in the BIOS, or in the windows installer?
if its in the BIOS but not the windows installer then you need to press F6 when it prompts during the installer load, and insert the floppy disk that came with your hard drive controller or mobo.

Is the power cable connected? I'm serious. Almost everytime I have built a PC I have forgot the HDD cable as it is tucked away behind the mass of unused cables.

Yes its pluged in but we tryed the f6 thing but it doesn't work. And it keeps on saying boot failure insert diskett into drive a and we tryed putting all the disks that came with it but nothing is happening, it comes up with a disk error. And another thing, it like trys to connect to a mac address or something.

Check if it showing up in the bios when you turn the PC on first. Make sure you have the Serial controler enabled in the bios and then you should be able to set it to auto and hit return and it will detect it. Reboot it and see if it is showing up. Also what do you have the jumper set on? I think it needs to be set to Master, or since it is a serial drive does it even have jumper settings anymore? Shouldn't. :shakes: :cord:

i am having this same problem with my 2 80GB SEAGATE SATA drives. yes all is enabled in bios, i have formatted, partitioned, not formatted and partitioned, i have tried everything. i had xp pro on these drives previously. if i load to windows on another computer with my sata drives installed, i can get to them in windows and put /access data on them. but in the other computer i have same problem of not being able to install windows to them.

Formatting and partitioning is all fine and dandy, but do the drives show up in the bios? That is the first step you need to take. Ya, or Na?

There are no drives showing up in the bios for me.

Ok, now we are getting somewhere. No driver, F6 button etc.. is going to work until you get the drive to show up in the bios.
Which board are you using? The K8T Neo-Fis2R or the K8T Neo2 Series? The second is the 939.

That is the 754 pin CPU I believe, so that makes it the K8T Neo-Fis2R. Give me a min. and I will look at the manual.

Make sure your drive is plugged into the Sata 1 or 2 conn not the Ser 1 or Ser 2 conn. Then make sure you have the
VT8237 SATA-IDE Controller set to enable.
This setting is used to enable/disabled the VT8237 SATA-IDE controller set to Enabled.
Try this and let me know where you are.

I think you are missing something. When you turn on your PC yo need to hit DELETE to enter the bios.
3-2
Entering Setup
Power on the computer and the system will start POST (Power On Self
Test) process. When the message below appears on the screen, press <DEL>
key to enter Setup.
DEL:Setup F11:Boot Menu F12:Network boot TAB:Logo
If the message disappears before you respond and you still wish to enter
Setup, restart the system by turning it OFF and On or pressing the RESET
button. You may also restart the system by simultaneously pressing <Ctrl>,
<Alt>, and <Delete> keys.
Selecting the First Boot Device
You are allowed to select the 1st boot device without entering the BIOS
setup utility by pressing <F11>. When the same message as listed above
appears on the screen, press <F11> to trigger the boot menu.
The POST messages might pass by too quickly for you to respond in
time. If so, restart the system and press <F11> after around 2 or 3 seconds to
activate the boot menu similar to the following.
The boot menu will list all the bootable devices. Select the one you want
to boot from by using arrow keys and then pressing <Enter>. The system will
boot from the selected device. The selection will not make changes to the
settings in the BIOS setup utility, so next time when you power on the system,
it will still use the original first boot device to boot up.
Select First Boot Device
Floppy : 1st Floppy
IDE-0 : IBM-DTLA-307038
CDROM : ATAPI CD-ROM DRIVE 40X M
[Up/Dn] Select [RETURN] Boot [ESC] cancel

i am no newb, so trust me when i say windows just does not detect my sata drives. in my sata raid controller setup, it sees both drives, and sees them striped 0. but when i get to the screen in windows xp pro isntall, where u pick the drive/partition to install windows to, no drives show up at all. i wish i had a copy of 2k pro to test this on. but i have tested my drives in my computer, and someone elses, same problems occure in each computer, same problem riddic is having, the drives show up in controller settings, but not in windows install.
