View Full Version : AN50R vs. Mushkin Level2 = Not even 205Mhz?

hey,
as you see, i'm new to xtreme systems. hi everyone :toast:
so, here's my problem. i recently finally upgraded my ram from 512mb corsair xms platinum pc3200 (bh6 chips), which did 245mhz 1:1 on my an50r, to 2x512mb mushkin pc3200 lvl2. thought i finally had the ram i always desired, BUT ... i cannot even reach 205mhz memtest stable, not even with 2,9v. memtest spits out errors all the way. it's running fine at 200mhz tho.
can anyone confirm equal problems with that setup? some known compatibility issues?
my rig:
a64 3200+ clawhammer
shuttle an50r v1.3 bios 26
2x512mb mushkin pc3200 level2
asus fx 5950u
bequiet 520w psu
thanks in advance :)

I take it you might want a CG stepping to solve that issue. try playing around with the dimms. swap them. try one at a time to see if it is a problem with one of the sticks.
but my guess is your cpu is a C0 and do not like 2x512 megs of memory

you can not run a CPU command of 1t with over 512megs of ddr and worse at tight timings and when overclocking..
sucks hu you need a CG stepping A64 and the abilty to set 2t command for CPU in the bios to help, but just to let you know
from 1t to 2t is such a performance hit that at
1t
205mhz 1:1 2x512 2-2-2-6
would equal
2t
230mhz 1:1 2x512 2-2-2-6
so you see its now a catch22 ;)

So the inability to run 1gb sticks is not a mobo issue, but a cpu issue? :(
I have the same setup (AN50R/3200+ C0), and have the same problems as he does.

Same setup as well...but a CG :)

same thing happened to me on the an50r. it's the board. seems all nf3150 boards suffered from this. heres my C0 stepping cpu with 2x512mb running just fine on a nf3 250gb board :D

I'm sorry, but you guys are WRONG. I've got a C0 CPU, and 2x 512 Corsair BH5 sticks (in dimms 1 and 2, dimm 3 is crap) running perfectly fine at 240Mhz.
The trick is to run at CAS 2.5, you CANNOT run CAS2 on most NF3 150 boards beyond ~220Mhz.
It could be your ram tho, did you check underneath the spreaders to make sure they're BH6? (Mushkin PC3200 Lvl2 is BH6 NOT BH5) They could be fake Mushkins... Leave the spreaders off, unless you put thermal paste on them, else they're just insulators. Try running with only 1 stick 'n see what happens.
There is no way you reached 245Mhz on your corsair BH6 sticks with only 2.9v though, what voltage did you use?

it is true, it is the board
most of the boards run like crap with 2x512, some even with 2x256. a new via or nforce3 250 board should solve this issue

I still think its the onchip controller, I have a gig over here on my Epox K8RDA+ NF250GB that will not do a mhz over 220, and 2x256 that will 270+ prime stable. Oh and this is a C0 stepping.

Could be that your mobo/cpu combo doesn't like that particular type of ram chip, what is it? BH5/BH6 is known to the be most compatible chip out there.

You may be right HK, the ram in question is OCZ 4200 EL both the 1 gig kit and the 512 kit. I will be getting a 3400+ real soon hopefully it will be a CG so then I can test this theory out for my own.

thanks for all the answers. yeah, my cpu is a c0 one, forgot to mention that. actually i don't wanna go for a new 754 cpu, i'm planning to jump on the 939 wagon once 939 boards with pcie are out. i'm about to buy a new watercooling system, enough expenses for the next 2 months ;)

believe it or not, i reached 245mhz with 2,9v, 2,5-4-4-7 timings tho. i'm afraid i don't have a screenshot to prove, sorry.
anyway, what do you mean by "fake mushkins"? i bought them from a friend, he got these sticks from jes-computer.de, the german reseller listed on mushkin.com. it has the black pcb n stuff, so i doubt it's some kinda fake ;)
btw, you sure pc3200 lvl2s are bh6 only? as far as i know, these can be either bh5 or bh6 ...

i used many rams on my an50r, every stick didnt ran as fine as i expected.
mushkin bh5, OCZ eb, Kingston bh5 ...
i am sure it's the mainboards fault, since i got a newcastle CG and the rams do fine on other boards
