OPP,
Nice job. The first Overclocker relevant review I've seen of the LS.......
Nice read and nice info.
So it seems then, that when the voltage goes UP that the LS starts to shine :D
One question, though... you said the LS tends to heat up a bit during use and the performance seems to drop. Would replacing the housing fans with some stout 120mm x 38mm models help? As well as dropping the ambient temps? I'm sure the r507'd compressor just runs "hot". In a chilly room, in a SoCal late night, how does the LS do??
But all in all, I like the LS. For a 24/7 desktop type rig, I think (and agree with you) it's #1. I think I want one....
After I retire my FX-53/939, an LS would be the perfect pasture :D

The LS compressor heats up in about 20 minutes or so.
The only performance lose from it after its warm is Idle temps, they drop but the thing still holds it's load.

I replaced the fans on mine charlie with Delta 150cfm fans. I haven't really tested load temps, but I gained 3C on the idle temps running the A8V at 1.8v. Went from -28C to -31C according to mbm. It also tends to take longer before the idle drops and if you let it recover they do go back up. With the new fans this happens much faster.
BTW, nice review OPP

Nice review Opp. I would actually think that the delay in rebooting would be a "good" thing though as this is designed to protect the compressor from damage. I know how we all hate delays but I also wouldn't want to damage a brand new $800 cooling kit for my pc either ( :stick: ).
A very well written review I'd say.

Well, I ran the LS at 10°C ambient temp with a P4 @ +3.9GHz and this is what I got, at idle:

Very nice review.
I built a VapoLS rig for my mate yesterday and can totally agree with the review. Huge cooling capacity on this thing indeed :toast:
The IC7MAX3+3.2E which was installed to the VapoLS rig I set up for my mate would do a SuperPi 1M run at 4520MHz and 8M run at 4480MHz - not bad for 100% 'out of the box' parts :D
highest evap temp I saw during the 8M run (take a bit over 5mins) at 4480/1.60V was -31C.
oh btw, guess whats the peak power consumption during a 3DMark03 run on a rig which has the VapoLS, 4.3G P4E and 9800XT (+3HDDs, 2DVDs etc) in it :D
only 644W (and this doesn't include the monitor..) :toast:

Hope you didn't have problems with the backplate of the CPU kit.
If you tighten those guides too much, they'll bend the motherboard, which sure isn't good...
Believe me, I killed one with that. Stupid manual, it said "Tighten the Guides till the spacers are touching the MotherBoard"
Great, I did as the manual said. That :owned: my mainboard...

Anyone know about PC-75 on a LS? I know it's the same width, but deeper....does it look "funny" hanging off the back of the LS??
C
Schmax
06-24-2004, 04:41 PM
I'm not sure if it will hang off the back of the LS but rather off the front. Just like in every ATX case, the mainboard sits in the back of the case, so the evap head needs to be 'around' the area where the mainboard is. Therefore, it would look something like this (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?postid=436250#post436250) unless you find a way to lengthen the evap tube (or whatever that flexible thing where the evap head is mounted is called)... sorry, me=phase change n00b
charlie
06-24-2004, 05:29 PM
you don't think it has enough "extra" length to reach a bit farther back?
C
pkrew
06-24-2004, 06:00 PM
I would be supprised if it didn't charlie. I didn't want to get a new case as I have two wavemasters. It was either hang off the front or back. It looked much better hanging off the back. Had plenty of length and still have more. Plus there's some play where the tube comes out

Nope, I tried it with a PC-70, there would always be a 'gap' of about 5cm between the front of the vapo and the front of the case. And evap head mounting would be a real pain in the......
btw:

OPP: bowman's review clearly indicated that the LS could not hold the evaporator temp at 0Watt heat load. Did you test the LS at 0Watt load too? If so, what was the result?

Any reason to move from a modded Mach 1 to this thing
it's $$$ but I like the idea of not having to have yards of sealstring sitting around in wait for next cpu/mobo upgrade.

Wow. I thought those things gave much better temps than that. What's the advantage over pelts?

pelts use more electricity and dont get nearly as low temperatures under load.

Comment. Bowman said that the MACHII GT was better under 200Watt, but the LS was clearly better over 200Watt. But when will you use 0Watt when you buy a phase-Change? At 175Watt they were about the same....

Not only is it a LS under a XE, but there`s another XE in the bottom of the XE case!
LS on the CPU, XE on the NB, and the other XE on the GPU.
I do believe it`s the only tripple phase-change machine in one case.
I don`t wanna crap on this thread with pics of my rig man!
...however, there is an LS involved, so, maybe.. :p:

Some of the pics were taken before the latest paint job and before I cut the window in the LS, and the upper PE in the first shots was replaced with a XE, I think the last one is the only one that shows it colors of today, gold and silver on the inside.
The Chill control panel for the GPU Vapo in the bottom of the XE case I installed into the third CD drive bay so all three chill controls display to the front, all are wired together too so they all must be at temp before booting, and any of them can shut the machine off if there is a failure. I`m real proud of her.

Every CPU and memory kit I have maxxes out at 230fsb so I would suspect the MB holding me back.

Yep, I`ll have to get in line and have Hell-Fire do me one up when he gets rolling again with his MODing thread. I don`t mind doing this kind of MODing moving Vapos around and wiring them, but looking at those tiny solder points....I`d rather leave that MODing to the experts. :D

Just right out of the box.
I ran it on air just to be sure it wasn`t DAO, then I put it on the Vapo. After a week I had problems with moisture corrupting the VC so I pulled it and dryed it over a lamp for a couple days and still had problems on air....so I pulled that tin cover off the GPU core and there was water traped under that cover. Ater drying again I then covered the little diods (or whatever they are) on the top of the GPU with sillicone sealant and left only the core uncovered to protect it from any future moisture and reinstalled in the Vapo. Haven`t had any trouble sense. Everything I have is right out of the box sept the power supply which I followed Hell-Fire`s volt mod tutorial and did that up.

I think we can expect a 6800 Ultra in the future. ;)
I have another Vapo PE I could move that to the NB and move the XE on top to put it side by side with the center one, I could see two 6800`s in SLI each being cooled by a Vapo, but, I would need some sort of PCI-E slot adapter and a SLI bridge adapter to get the cards far enough apart to get the Vapo`s on.
saaya
07-11-2004, 01:06 PM
or you need custom cooling heads that have the hoses leaving the block on the side and not on the top.
post in the phase change section.
and maybe you wont even have to mod the blocks and just have to bent the hoses a bit. the 6800U cooling is a 2 slot solution so you have around 5cm bwtween the first and the second card, maybe it even fits like that?
Rukee
07-12-2004, 07:55 AM
I can`t change evaporators, no tools and no-one around here smart enough to gass the units propper anyway.
Yeah, a custom enclosure for the XE evaporators would be great. Open on the side instead of the end and then have some sort of fitting or insert that was curved on the inside and flat on the other so it would fit between the cooling evaporator and the core. It wouldn`t be the best transfer of heat on the side of the evaporator, but for the VC, I bet it would be fine.
