according to 3center.org NGO has a beta of a softmod in their latest 1.5c catalyst drivers!
http://www.3dcenter.org
Im NGO-Treiber 1.5c für die ATi Radeon-Serie befindet sich laut den Programmierern die Beta-Version eines Radeon X800 Pro -> XT-PE Soft-Mods
According to the writers of the ATi Radeon series NGO drivers ,the NGO driver version1.5c includes the Beta-version of a X800 Pro -> XT-Pe Soft-Mod
so a softmod IS possible after all? ive heard of it before but it didnt work because of the rage theater chip?

Interesting. Let's hope it works for those guys who don't have laser cuts.

doesn't work for me.
but then again, thats got to be the worst softmod I ever tried.
it doesn't have a ATI2Mag file so they want you to download the catalyst 4.6 and take that one...
then even then it just wants you to install the ATI cat and not this one, and when you do try to run it manually, well, it's still just the plain old X800 Pro...
no softmod of anysort.

ok, I tried again using the dos way and that did nothing...
on top of that, it tells you to manually do the mod after this supposedly does it.
this thing doesn't seem to do anything more then rename the driver, but then again, thats not really anything new.

im sure it does more than rename the driver LOL ;)
they never claimed this beta softmod would work! they just mentioned that they are working on it and that it looks promising.
thx for testing the drivers and sharing the results! :)

someone else with the more experience with NGO drivers should give this a shot, cause its entirely possible I am doing something wrong.
theier readme file afterall is just the default ATI readme, so it's misleading.
theres no real instructions that I can find on how to do this mod.

I'll give it a shot, my pro actually has the rage theater chip :D So maybe I'll have a little more luck

some ppl over at the 3dcenter.de forums tested the 1.5b drivers without any success. but somehow i doubt that a softmod is impossible, it's just like with the 9500np and 9800se ... in the beginning, there was a softmod. the rest is history ;)

what is this softmod "supposed" to do exactly. Unlock the 4 extra pipelines? Or just make it show up as a x800xt pe, which a bios flash would do anyway (or does to mine anyway).

of course it's supposed to unlock the 4 extra pipes, just as the mentioned 9500np and 9800se softmods did. for "just make it show up as a x800xt", you can just edit your driver's .ini :)

yea thats what I figured. Just read that it wasn't supposed to be able to do that. Of course it was on another board that I saw that so I should have know better ;)
Almost done with the download, so we'll see what happens
EDIT:
Tried it out. When it goes to install the driver, it tells me its not compatible with my display driver  For some reason I've had that problem with all of the ATI drivers

ack, i mean "in the beginning, there was a hardmod" - my fault :)
what i was going to say:
when these cards were released, there were hardmods first and rumours about a possible softmod. both cards "got" their softmods later, so why not again with the x800 series?
