View Full Version : Why does DI hate me?
Got my board back from hell fire the other day and I thought. "What better way to break it in then with a little dry ice." so I insulated the board up and popped in my 3.0C Malay (30 Cap SL6WU) and fired it up. The board booted in to windows and was running superpi @ 4.83ghz also 5:4 with the mem @ 258 (2-2-2-6 KHX3000/256) then the board dropped below -50C *SHUT OFF* and now it won't turn back on. I'm so pissed off. All the mods are correct and working...and I Don't think condensation killed the board....because all my memory and cpu and stuff still works wonderful. Do you think something got frozen and stopped or shorted somehow? I have no idea...what happened....but on a lighter note I am happy to report that my maxtor 30gb hd works even after spilling boiling alcohol on it :D I'll post some pics soon. Need to get my camera cable back.

*UPDATE* Well I took charlie's advice and ran the board this mourning. Worked perfectly with no probs. One thing though. Dimm slot 1 was burned out from taking too much voltage :( Does anyone know if I can use dual chan in 2 and 4?

Your DIMM1 may not be dead.... may still be wet and "shorting".
Try later.

careful with blow dryer......if it's a real HOT gun, you could loosen up the SMD components.......

bh2k,
you've tried everything like clear CMOS and everything, right?

have you filled the socket with dielectric grease?
charlie

be careful.........if water drips on those row of caps and shorts out the undersides of those caps, you're DONE. Get some armaflex around the main tube, and get SOMETHING around the socket at the PCB.....

258 (2-2-2-6) 3.2vdimm So charlie your saying I should find a way to insulate the caps near the socket? Any way you would suggest for that?

Lot's of different possibilities.... start with making a neoprene foam gasket to go between the pcb and the DI unit, with a cut-out in the center for the CPU. Then cover the exposed metal parts of the base with something...
I killed a P4C800 this way.......that long row of capacitors is the achilles heel. if condensation (water) stretched underneath that row, it shorts them out, causing a sizzling sound and bad things. Just experiment... play around :D And for gosh sake........get armaflex on your tube ;) you'll be a degree or 2 colder , too.
Which fluid do you use?

99% will actually help you 1-2C...... do you notice the 91% getting slushy? I just noticed that's a 3.0C that you got up to 4800+ that's GREAT! For some reason I thought it was a Prescott..
C
no, it's a 3.0c 30cap sl6wu yea, it does get slushy, but it's the higest grade i can find
this good DE grease?

dry ice hates you because you touch yourself at night
charlie, is it true that u have to be over 18 or 21 to buy 99% ethanol, just like liquor?
yes, gotta be 21 and why don't you go ride your bike somewhere? :D
