Hello guys & gals.
I'm thinking of upgrading my rig into S754 A64 based-system.

Well I thought about S754 3200+ / NF3 250 setup, but I don't know which CPU should I take:
3200+ ClawHammer 2G w/1Mb L2 cache, or
3200+ NewCastle 2.2G w/512Kb L2 cache

I saw Karnivore's great review and still, I don't know which CPU should I take - which one will give the best performance? (200 additional Mhz's vs. 1Mb cache) which one will give me the best clocks? (if the winner is ClawHammer it must be CG revision!).

Thanks!

go with the clawhammer, you can always push it to 2.2ghz

Depends on if you get a lucky chip, also depends on the game, some benefit more from cache (Older games, OpenGL and UT to name a few) while others like the higher clockspeeds.

Also depends on how far you're willing to push it. If you don't mind doing volt mods and watercooling, then pushing a clawhammer would yield better performance.

There is no one STRAIGHT answer to which is better.

Like HK said, Its really up to you and what you plan on doing with it. Heck i'm only running my Clawhammer'd 3200+ at 2.3ghz. Still the 1mb L2 cache gives me about 1sec better super pi times then a newcastle at the same speeds.

I don't really care about the whole super pi thing, i'm a gamer. Thats what my rig is used for, and I got the clawhammer cheaper than I coulda got a newcastle. ;)

I got my new castle a64 3000 running at 2.3ghz no problem too. This processor is the lesser of the 2. 2ghz w/ 512k L2 and still runs like a champ. But like WesM63 said, this is my gaming rig also and it does what I want it to do. Actually i was just able to run a bench at a 1:1 245x10 with 1.7volts on air and got 23k+ in 3dmark2001.

Thanks for the replies.

With my cheap im aiming for the 3Ghz+ (R507 Prom).
I know that the NewCastles are better overclockers because of the later week. I just need to know - for example - ClawHammer @ 2.5Ghz vs. NewCastle @ 2.5Ghz, which one will give the best preformance? (Im a gamer too, but I also like too bench).

clawhammer gives the best performance clock for clock :)

Great! thanks for the answer.
Can you recommend me good steppings (And weeks) I want a chip that can clock 3Ghz+. It must be CG rev. Thanks!
