OK... I've made up my mind. After many years of being an Intel fanboy, an upgrade to LGA775/Prescott is just too much for me to swallow.
I'm currently running a P4 Northwood 2.4C @ 3.125 with an Ati 9800XT and 1 Gb of Mushkin PC3500 Lvl II BH-5. My currently rigs scores about 20K in 3Dmark2001se.
I've pretty much decided to go with an Ati X800XT AGP card and
I'm willing to lay down the bread for an FX-53/939.
Other than this, I'm lost. Can I use my Muskin BH-5 RAM? I think I can but will it kill me as far as overclocking? It does DDR416 2-2-2-6 without a vmod on my ASUS P4C800-E DLX with no problems now and would probably do more.
The posts about everyone killing A64's scares me silly. I REALLY do not want to smoke a 800.00 CPU. From what I gather, this seems to only be occuring on boards with Nvidia chipsets?
That's enough for me. I'll go with a board with a Via (grits teeth) chipset.
Here's what I need to know:
The best motherboard for the FX-53/939. I don't care about onboard sound but I would like onboard LAN. Must support SATA HD (74GB Raptor in current rig). Not into RAID yet but onboard RAID support would be nice just in case I change my mind.
Should I stick with my Muskin BH-5 or dump it for something else?
What kind of overclock can I expect with an FX-53/939 and my RAM on air? No vmods please or anything that's likely to smoke the CPU.
Last but not least, what's my upgrade path if I go with an
FX-53/939? Will I be able to upgrade to an FX-55 on the same board, etc.
