View Full Version : Would you all be willing to help me build a phase change unit?
I really wanna start a new project, since it's summer and I'm out of school. And was wondering, how much it would run me to build one? I was thinking roughly $200-$250? But, all of that is besides the point. My main question is, after I purchase all of the materials, will you all walk me through step by step in order to build hopefully a -50C cooler under load?
Also, how would I make the blocks for mounting?

first of all...no one is going to hold your hand all the way through it.
First read, read, read, read...then read some more threads/articles/etc. Then if you come across anything thats really got ya stumped...thats what this place is for:D
As for the blocks, just use a mill or drill press on blocks of copper or braze a waterblock.

Read the stickies starting with the safty with refrigerants. And yes I will help you all the way through... no Problem..... For a Block you can use a an old pentium HS the copper one and braze a cap on it...

If you have the proper tools it is easy and relatively cheap to build a phasechange cooler. You might want to look at Lard Arses guides about tools and converting a window AC unit to direct die cooler. If you cant loan the tools and need to purchase all, then the price will skyrocket and you would be better of just buying a Prommy on a Vapo.

lord arse's guides are really complete...but..i dunno, i think 250 would be too less...if u need to get all the tools and gas and...lol, its a nice thing that all the best phasechange unit engineers post here :D

Keep in mind though, being 15 is going to make it hard for you to get the gas you want/need.

and the money to buy descent tools.
a descent torch set already costs a lot of money. (torch, tubing, gouges, ethylene and oxygen bottle)

^^you can just get a MAPP torch :p:
I don't plan on doing it all over night, for me it's most likely going to be a long drawn out process. Or I might just not build it, and go the WC'ing route. It all depends on what kind of income my jobs going to be getting me.
And after reading Lard Arses guides, damn, this sounds fun. :)
I aplogize on this one for sounding so n00bish its crazy. But, what exactly is this? Is it the evaporator, or is it the mounting block?

Both
Alright, but what is the copper shim surrounded by the insulation? And how would I go about making one? Or is that the thing I'd take off of an old heatsink?

so you dont bork your board and cpu from condensation....
And how would I go about making one?
it would be alot easier to purchase one from someone in these forums that have the equipment to make a strong evap with a tested design.
Or is that the thing I'd take off of an old heatsink?
huh....
why keep bumping with "Question WAS answered" :stick:

*Question was answered*
Think about what your saying before you post.
"STOP SPAMMING" the board.
I apologize runmc. Those were previous posts in which I had asked a question. So I had figured that I might as well put "*question answered*. Little did I realize, I deleted the post, and only posted the edit. I'm sorry.
