View Full Version : Calling all 4GHz P4s

OK, I need to do a feasability study on getting an HT P4 to ~4GHz. I'm currently thinking this would be possible using a 3.2 Northwood or Prescott running at 250MHz FSB or a 2.6/2.8 running at 300/285MHz respectively.

1) It has to have HT, otherwise I may as well get an A64 ;)

2) Is it realistic to expect any old P4 I buy to get to these speeds?

3) Will water cooling be sufficient to cool a P4 at ~4GHz?

4) Northwood or Prescott?

WRT water cooling I'm talking about an Eheim 1250, 1/2" everything, heater core w/ dual 120mm fans + shrouding and at the very least performance wise a DD RBX.

I'm looking at getting a P4 for work, but just because I won't be mucking around with it *so* often as my gaming rig doesn't mean I don't want to OC the hell out of it ;)

I look forward to your responses guys :D

for 24/7 4ghz on water try 3.2C or 3.4C NW and run relatively low fsb, 1:1 (235-250)

So my idea of 4GHz on water isn't a complete pipe dream then?

I've got 4GHz on a 3.0c NW that is air-cooled 24/7. It will do 4.1GHz, but the temps are a little too high for me.

What speeds are you running your memory at and what voltage for the RAM and the CPU?

I've tried my 3.0C in a WC system, Prime stable at 4GHz...
I guess the RBX can handle it. The system I tried it in had a WW block.

What temps were you getting with the WW? I know the WW is better, but the RBX isn't a million miles away like this MAZE3 I currently have.

The temp was really dependant on the air temp and speed of radiator fans.
It is also almost impossible to compare temperatures between diffrent motherboards.

And to be honest, I don't remember really, so I rather not say anything.

But the feeling of the system (WW, Eheim 1250, tripple 120mm radiator) is that whatever load you put on it, the temps are still the same, with approx a 5-6C idle-to-load diffrence. (Abit IC7-G motherboard)

It's not a pipe dream. You just have to get a good chip. Mine will do 4ghz on good air. But also i bult a rig last week with a 3.2 that wont do over 3.6ghz.

It's still a lot of luck with a good chip.

But good luck on your goal.

3.4 and water is guaranteed 4ghz :D so is phasechange with a 3.2

Tbh, I'm too much of a cheap skate and I don't earn enough to "waste" money on a 3.4. I like to try and get a balance between speed and £££. I'm not that bothered about getting over 4GHz, it'd just be nice is all :)

Thanks for the WW info. I really am going to have to improve this MAZE3...

not a sure thing i got a 3.2 that used to do 4ghz at 1.7volts now it wont work stably unless its at 3.2ghz.

I understand that *any* overclock isn' a sure thing, but hey, even 3.2GHz w/HT isn't exactly slow for web dev is it? ;)
