View Full Version : Thoughts on 2.4a/AI7 combo?
Well newegg has a sale 'till tomorrow afternoon on the 2.4a for $120 shipped so i was considering picking up one to play with.
From what i've read the AI7 seems to be a nice inexpensive board to go with the cheap CPU but i'm wondering if the power circuit would be able to handle the Prescott heavily overclocked?
I guess i'm hoping for someone that just happens to have this combo to chime in with thier input but i'm open to any thoughts on the likelyhood of this being a good combo.
It'll be paired up with 2 hitachi 80gb SATA's/9700p and 2x256mb KHX3000 or 2x256mb KHX3200's provided which works best with it. Thanks for feedback!
Forgot to add the cooling: kick butt home made water cooling.

You'd probably be better off getting a 2.8c or a 2.4c depending on your budget. While the new 2.4As clock pretty high, they come up short when it comes to bus speed.
I totally agree with that lalPOOO, however this is more of a novelty system than a hardcore rig. I'm curious if the pressy is gonna wipe the board out if it's pushed very far.
I'm just looking for a new odd toy and the 2.4a definetly fits the bill.
the 2.4A is slow in windows, and it will burn your Ai7 in hell.. (did it to my Ai7 board)
PWM Temps up to 95c.. thats HOT..
Thanx dpa, that's good enough for me!
I wanted to give the pressy hell and not the motherboard....
I guess i'll think about something else for a toy now.

I have that exact combo and I love it, I do 3.5 on the stock cooler @ stock volts.
Just make sure that your PWM area is cooled very well. I have a 80mm fan there and it keeps the PWM temp in the high fifties, I also put some heatsinks on the mosfets.

I amtesting one in an AI7 now
Keep a fire extinguisher handy and let us know how it shakes out.
May you get close to 3.8-4ghz on air!

Remember to put a fan blowing on the MB for all you water, phase cooling fans and the temps will drop. I've had my Prescott 2.4a running for over a week folding. 80mm fan in the side case blowing on the board. PWM tems are 51C. Take the fan off and they rise..
But still the memory bandwidth loss will murder you. Unless you can get to 200fsb with it and good memory. but for the price it's a killer cheap rig.
I bought my 2.4a prescott on a refurb. $109 retail, and a $59 IC7, and a AI7 for $59 at the same time.
There are some 2.4a prescotts on refurb on newegg now for $104 retail. Im assuming people ordered them for their 845 boards and they didnt work on some. They work on my abit 845 but not my Epox. The prescott also worked in my TH7II. i850 rdram board. Go figure!!!!

aye i used to have an ai7/ 2.4a combo, the ai7 was like a sick dog for weeks when using it. Didn't much like the p4p800 either.
The IC7 series is meant to be good for prescotts.

Just got this combo myself doing 3.6 but wont go much further. PWM temps are in the low 80's with a fan directly on them. Not to mention the helluva load it's putting on my LS.
