I didnt know where to put it so it went here :p:
I need to get my stock 9500pro cooler off but should I heat it up with a hair dryer or put it in the freezer. I did the freezer trick on my Ti200 no problem but I ripped the core off a GF 256 when I tried it...

It would be the same thing...
My 9800np had thermal greese. What brand 9800XT is it? I cant belive they would put a pad on a 500 dollar card :stick:

Cos im fitting my TEC to it later. And am using AS5 on it.
Run a couple loops of 3dMark 03 or play an hour of visually intensive games, anything that would work the card and make it heat up.

So, it is safe to remove the cooler on the 9800xt without heating, you were answering afireinside's question right?

Have you even tried it yet? I HIGHLY doubt they would use a pad on a 500 dollar card :stick:
I'll try using a hair dryer tommorow.

Yeah, for my AIW 9700 Pro I just used a hair dryer on max setting, pointed it under the hsf at different positions for a few minutes, came right off. Getting the yellow crap off sucks though anybody know a special method for taking it off when its heated up?

i just pulled mine off(9700P). Didnt have to heat it or anything, just twist and pull

just twist it to the left, then to the right.... keep twisting it for like 5 mins, be patient. you will be able to twist it a bit further into each direction after 2 min or so, then after a few min it comes off veeery easily and without much force.

Ok if I can get the little clip things all the way out I'll try turning it. I kinda started to do that on my SB sink to see if it was glued or what.

The goo is slightly thicker than thermal paste. Much a fuss about nothing. Maybe a twist or two.
And yeah, the first words that come to mind and this thread are not "xtremeoverclocking" :hehe:
The units are relying on the pins to hold it on unlike some sb heatsinks.

hmm, how about Engine Degreaser or Carbeurator Cleaner?
spray a little bit on the surface and just work it off with a paper towel.

Ummm... if it has clips, odds are that the worst it's got is thermal tape. Which means just pull out clips and pull the damn thing off. Then some iso alcohol to clean it up. No need to use this hairdryer stuff.
You only freeze it to break epoxy.

The pins have a center pin in each.. you have to pull the center pin out then you can pull the main retianing pin out..

You sure?
My 9500np and 9700np both had the pin-inside-a-pin thing.
