Well looks like the storm took out my intel system. Was actually my main gaming machine despite being the slowest of my systems. IS7, 2.4@3.4, 1gb ram, 5900>5950 flash. Had 2xWD 160GB SE drives on the ICH5R raid controller with abit SATA adapters. AFter got off work yesterday noticed that alarm clock was blinking. Went to computer room, all were off. Fired em up and noticed Intel system had the hard drive death whine going on. Raid array failed. gave option to repair and luckily it made it to windows long enough for me to transfer some files over the network. System is locking alot and not sure what else is hosed. Luckily my A64's were unplugged b/c I was messing with them the other night :O.
The mobile AXP seems ok. I guess it could have been worse. Bad HD and hopefully that's it.
Sorry, just had to tell someone :O

NOOOOOOO

Sorry about that m8..

I feel your pain.. had it done to me..

Thats why i bought some cheap ups's for my pcs at work..
for around 80 pounds you get a top notch surge protector and a 10 min run on a battery..

Worth the money imo..

OUCH i feel your pain. happened to me once n i kicked myself in the ass for that. i got the best UPS i could find. APC Smart-UPS SUA1500INET. 500 euros, but it will handly any storm. all APC ups's will refund your hard earned $$$ you paid for you system if it still frys while using one. i definately recomend them.

Last night I got several thunderstorm and tornado warnings
Power went out and came back with serve lightning so I quickly pulled out all my computer plugs from the sockets. You should always do that when you have a thunderstorm

hehe I was so scared. This had to be the biggest thunder storm in the world. I could see the lightning sparks come out and the whole area would lit lol

If you live in an area where there are a lot of lightning strikes, a UPS is a must-have item, IMO. APC and Belkin both make decent ones. One advantage to having a UPS is that it maintains voltage levels, as well as protecting against power spikes.

well hrm
system is now running and has been all day
hd is loud as hell as you can hear a "whine" coming from it as it spins. I thought I'd do a few things to just push it over the edge so to speak and ran defrag a few times, but it hasn't locked anymore.
Now I'm wondering if Wd will even give me an RMA for this drive as I guess it's working now, but I really don't trust it for data anymore. It's just way too loud. Not quite delta fan loud, but drowns out any other case noise, fans etc...

@ jupiler..

APC and Belkin seem to be the best ones.. performance wise there are pretty much like for like..

How ever belkin's RMA policy is like no other...
one of my ups died all of a sudden.. i called them up and they sent a new one out BEFORE i had even returned the old one..(next day)

And the told me to keep the battery as a gesture of good will..

Good service.. and they the give some sort of gurantee money wise again pc components being protected by there ups's

:D

Nah.. it either works or it doesn't. It can't just get slower after getting hit by lightning.

OOOooh god! I hate thunder storms. And funny hard drives. The only time a thunderstorm has ever damaged anything is when I defragging overnight and when i woke up, the screen was on the POST screen reporting a primary hdd failure. And the drive WAS dead.

APC VA models are crap and are a plain waste of money. Spend a bit more and get the CS version. I work in a industrial park and the power surges fry computers all the time even using crappy VA UPS the CS don't have the same problems. I guess they must have nicer tolarence then VA models.
