I was just thinkin' here.....do you guys think it'd be worth my time to create a seperate 5GB partition for a seperate install of WinXP with next to nothing installed.....mainly necessary drivers, SP1, and benchmark apps? I wouldn't even be installing LAN drivers or Norton/ZA so there's no chance of any infections or useless processes running.....and I'd just transfer the screenshots to my other drive to upload.

I was just remembering how much I gained in my benchmarks last time I formatted and I thought that it might be a good idea.

Any input???

I think its definitely worth it. It will gain you quite a bit having a finely tuned OS without all the extraneous stuff we use for 24/7 use. You got the right idea...only install the drivers you absolutely need, turn off all unecessary services, disable peripherals you don't need in BIOS, etc....

I also use a partition with finely tuned OS with minimal loaded.

Its worth it. People like to defrag before benches too, so a smaller partition with less data helps in that area too.

How do you have your computer automatically boot to your normal OS(OS install with games, programs, etc.)instead of your benching OS?

Thx for the input guys, it's already finished and all setup.....works great. It's nice not having to have norton and stuff installed so that i can just go right to work. ;)

Now I just gotta pick up a new mobo to "fix" my scores. ;)

Windows comes with a boot manager, so does Linux.

I just press F8 during the POST and it brings me to the screen where I would normally choose to enter into safe mode.....except you can choose to return to the OS choices menu.....and it'll simply list your seperate installs, and you can choose which to boot into.

I might be going about this the long way, but it works fine for me, and I love having this seperate partition.....everything installed for benching I wanted and still have 800MB of my 3GB free so it's all good. It's nice to boot into the benchmark partition once in awhile just to experience how fast my computer CAN be. ;)

Heh, thx.....you beat me too it. ;)

I'm glad that I actually just figured out that you can save a 3DMark result and reload it later to submit the score at a later date.....I never really played around with some of those options a whole lot. the reason I was worried is beacause since I have no interent connection in my Benchmarking partition, I was afraid I would never be able to submit my scores.

Well, everything's going fine for now, and I'm still working at maxing out the FSB with this AI7/2.8C combo. I'm working my way up slowly and doing it right (bumping the fsb by 5MHz at one and running dual Prime95 for 12hours each time) so it's taking a little while, but I'm happy with the results so far.
