Just built this new box.

p4 3.0C @ 15X240, cooled by SLK 900U
Epox 4pca3+ rev. 2.x
2x512 generic pc4200 ram @ safest timings, no PAT
9700 pro slightly oc'ed
case with 6 fans, temps are case - 30, cpu - 42 idle, 51 full load (should work up to 60C w/o crashing).
Winxp pro SP1. latest drivers for everything (as far as i can tell).

The problem is although the system is rock stable (prime95 and SOF2 for hours), it locks up when I leave it at logon screen and go to work (win-key-L). If I leave it at desktop, it's fine. I checked many things including power management and the like, there's nothing suspicious there.
Someone plz help.

You have to realize that I cannot test this: I can't just change things and then wait one day for things to go or not go wrong. These lockups happen some time during the day, I am guessing, a few hours after running at logon screen. Testing every variable, where the test procedure takes a day, would take a long long time. Therefore I am asking for people who have seen this before, or have heard of this before.

You can only change to Multiprocessor PC trough a reinstall.

Try to see if it still does that stock. Regarding your question about changing from 1->2 cpus or from 2->1 - check google! It's been done and redone 100 times.
