Just sold my 2.8C / IC7-G / Alpha 8924 and for the same price I'm getting a 2.8E / ic7-MAX3 / SP-94.
The 2.8C just plain sucked and I could only get 3.2 GHz @ 1.6v, my ocz pc4000 was running underclocked @ 230 so that just made me crazy.
What to you think I'll get FSB wise with this setup? Maybe around 4 GHz on air? Also, is the RAID controller the same on the two boards? I have a couple seagate 120 SATA in RAID 0 and I don't want to re-install again.
Do you think that my 250 MHz OCZ ram could do 285 MHz @ 3.0v for 1:1, 4 GHz action? Still worried about the stability of the board at high vcore, but I hope I get lucky!
can't wait! coming in on friday.

That sounds like a good swap to me. About your oc target...you'll be quite lucky to get within even 200Mhz of that target with only air. Remember it took prommies to reach those speeds with most northwood c's. Don't get your hopes up unless you have a special stepping...like M0 or D1.

4.0 on air is a good goal, especially with the SP-94
And there have been plenty Northwood C's @ 4.0GHz on air...

Charlie just got a 2.8A Prescott 533fsb, and it looks to be a monster. 4ghz on air @ 1.5volts.Check it out! (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?postid=449946#post449946)

I'm getting excited! I was almost close to getting a mobile AMD, but it's been 4 years since I had my 1600+ and I know     about them now. I really don't care much about speed now anyways, everything it fairly quick, I just want the bragging rights.
I hope the new processor runs hot b/c my room is already 28c everytime I come home from work as it is right now.

er bragging rite?...athlon fx @ 3.3 kills any intel oc on games

ya, but an fx costs what?
sp-94 is back ordered, is the zalman 7000 as good, or should i wait and use the stock cooler.
I'm guessing I won't be getting 4 GHz on the stock cooler...

wait for the SP-94, it's worth it.

Yea, SP-94 / Tornado are an unbeatable combination for air.

Where in this discussion were they talking about an Athlon FX?

First of all, Tom Holck has one of the only a64 chips I know of that will go to 3.3ghz. NOt many chips go that high, even with high end cascade cooling. SO since we are talking about special chips, I'd be willing to bet that an engineering sample 3.4ghz EE @ 4.8ghz stable could beat the a64. Yeah, I know not all chips go that high, but one will.

I am going to sell my prescotts they were the first batch made, so i will get a couple of the new ones now.

I hope a get a very resent pack date because my 2.8c already put out too much heat for my liking and I don't want even more heat unless I get some big clocks.

Please, 3 of 4 fx53's i have seen will all hit 3.3ghz.
my FX53 will hit 3ghz on a unmodded SK8V on stock mach1 cooling. stick to telling people about p4's :D
here is a FX53 (jasons) on dry ice

I actually don't mind thread crapping, via intel vs. AMD, price vs. performance, but come on..
The 2.8E is $179.00 and the FX-53 is $750. Why are we even comparing the two?
It would be like me saying I'm getting a mobile 2500+ for bragging to my buddies cause it is running at 2700 MHz on air and then someone posting that the a 3.4EE on cascade cooling is way faster.
Getting great performance for very cheap is almost as cool as getting the absolute most expensive stuff and going for an ultra high clock IMO.
Comparing apples to IBM here??

Got my 2.8E in on friday, as well as a IC7-Max3 and I'm using my old OCZ PC4000 RAM.
My SATA RAID 0 array kept rebooting when I dropped the new mobo/chip in so I had to do a windows repair and all is well now.
I only have the stock cooler cause the sp94 is backordered, so I don't know what my O/C will be right now. Pack date is March 30, so I'm alittle disappointed with that.
Still hoping for 4 GHz... (not with stock cooler though)

hmmmm,
what is the max I should put though this chip on air? I'm using 1.5v right now and it's at 78c under load, 48c idle. Wow! that's hot.
It's running at 3.7 GHz right now. I'm priming as we speak, I can't wait to get my sp94.

please sir keep a fire extinguisher near your computer at all times if those are your true temperatures
I know they run hot but almost 80C
I would be content with stock speeds for now. Seriously. Try not to go above 60-65C load.
holy smokes.....literaly:P
keep it cool man........I dont like going over 50c on my barton:D

dude you better back off honestly.
i get 3.5ghz@1.39vcore on my 2.8e and load temps of 67c
im sure my mobo over states my temps by 10c also
1.5v is way to much on a prescott and air cooling if you want it to live that is.
i think if you try the settings i am you will be safe.
i wont go near 1.5vcore until i get my prommy next week.

Mine 2.4a is running stable folding for the last 4 days 1.5 volts and 3.65ghz on air.
Again Prescotts do not mind the extra Heat. IF it's stable 60's and 70's are fine.
I've put 1.7volts in to a prescott in my vapo trying to get 4ghz out of a 2.8 chip. The chips are spec'd to run in the 60's That's what they run @ stock with a factory intel heatsink. If there was a problem running 60- or 70c's then intel would not warranty them or put them out.
I can run my prescott in the 80 celsius range and it will still Run Prime and Folding.
but if you cant stand the heat, get out the kitchen.

Well, I'm stuck at 3.71 GHz (265 1:1) I tested my ram at 3.2v from stock to this fsb to check for any instability. I know that there is a problem with most max3 mb's in that they are unstable at 3v+ to the ram. Does this happen at all speeds, is the problem independent of the bus speed? I ask because it worked fine at 3.2v at stock speeds, and I just want to eliminate that as a stability issue.
Btw, the stock cooler sucks donkey.... It's over 80c primed with the side of the case off, ambient air 23c. This is with the vcore at 1.5 (~1.45 under load). I hope I didn't get a prescott that runs really really hot, compared to the newer ones cause it would just suck.

While waiting for my cooling solution I have gone "ghetto" on my stock intel heatsink.

Yeah with these, you don't need no extra blanket in winter :D That looks pretty good with that crappy HSF. I'm sure you'll get pretty damn close to 4 Ghz with the SP. Good luck!

I got my SP-94 in finally. I'm going to install it tonight. Now, I've heard different ppl discuss whether to have the fan sucking or blowing (insert standard BJ joke in here) so what it best?
prescott: 3.7 GHz, 1.55v
Intel Headsink + stock fan:
idle: 64c load: 82c
Intel Heatsink + 80mm tornado (5v)
idle: 58c load: 77c
Intel Heatsink + 80mm tornado (12v)
idle: 50c load: 68c
we'll see how sp94 does now.

testing stability now, looking good....
RAM is at 1:1 so we're pulling 6400 mb/s in sandra
