Im putting together a workstation and Im wondering if I can get some advice from you guys. I already bought two 3.06Ghz 533Mhz Xeon chips and Im trying to figure out which motherboard to go with. I want to overclock both the chips to get the maximum speed out of both chips. The board that I have in mind right now is the IWill DH800 but Im open for suggestions. ANy help would be appreciated. Thanks

ASUS PC-DL on Intel's Canterwood is a good choice ;)

The Danish site www.Tweak.dk has a mod who has tried both boards. He says the Iwill owns the ASUS :)

it is the owner of the site who has the dually.
He has two 3,06 ghz 533 bus, doing 3,8 ghz under his special modded mach 2 with two evaporators :D
the new Iwill owns the asus ;)
EDIT: some pictures of the cooling unit: http://www.tweak.dk/tests2.php?id=353

dual xeons are not worth it, they share the same fsb wich slows them down. get a dual opteron 246 system, 2mb L2 cache ,each cpu has 2 memory controllers and with the 64bit win xp you will get a nice boost again.
get the MSI K8T Master2!
cheaper and faster than a dual xeon setup!

he's already got the xeons, its kinda hard to go back now.
go with the Iwill
Super strokey

he could always ebay them or list them on a forum

true, but the chances he gets what he payed for them (unless he got a really good deal) from ebay or a forums is very low

thats true too, but doesnt the opterons spank teh xeons?

Super strokey
They sure do. However, it's kinda impossible to O/C them AFAIK.

huh? nah, its anything from impossible to oc them! there is a shop that sells oced opteron rigs! 140@2ghz (1.4ghz@2ghz)
jason was ocing a couple of opterons as well, he only noticed that they all maxed out at around 2.2ghz
at 2.2ghz they still beat an oced dual xeon setup. the 244 opterons cost like the half of the xeons he has, so even if he sells the xeons losing money (selling them for less than he bought them) he saves money as the final system willbe cheaper than the xeon system and at the same time it will be faster :)

Iwill looks to be the best , did anyone tried using SuperMicro Dual Xeon boards yet?

Yes, However they are not for the masses here. They are rock solid server boards. The bios's don't have hardly any options.
I concur also, Dual Opteron will own any xeon machine. Why do you think I built a dual opteron game server? :D Cost was cheaper because I didn't have to buy the ssi complaint powersupply to run my opterons. With the xeons, the darn thing won't even boot.

hey wes, post some bench results of your machine, maybe that`ll convince him :D

That overclock is way too low for that cooling... I could hit those speeds if I had the time to pin-trick my M0's. cvidler and P4NorthWood had their Xeons at 3.5~3.8 on bare water (P4NW) and TEC (for cvidler). P4NW even had his ASUS vdimm modded at 3.65V and ran 4:5 (yes, mem @ 5!) for some 260+ action :)
I didn't have the time to mod mine... So I sold it :D New rig is in the works tho'! :toast:
The Iwill is better than the ASUS, but do read these fine threads, they contain all the info you need:
Iwill DH800 thread @ 45 pages (http://forums.2cpu.com/showthread.php?threadid=50793)
ASUS PC-DL thread @ 208 pages and locked (http://forums.2cpu.com/showthread.php?threadid=40755&perpage=30&pagenumber=1)
Weird nobody mentioned these before

How much vcore were they running the cpus at?
cause the guy I talk about can only run 1,6V (max bios setting, and it undervolts) trough his cpus at this time ;)

plus one prommie for 2 cpus means the cooling is pretty much as powerfull as tec cooling, even less efective actually.

it is r404 gas he is using and i think he mentioned that the temperature was right about 0ºC on the cpus ;)

I dont suppose superpi supports dual cpu  Id love to see what dualie ocd opterons could do in that.

yeah, with two 227W tecs and a loop powerfull enough to cool them youd get temps below zero easily... even 172W tecs at full volts would get you below zero with 3.8ghz and only slightly increased vcore.

aoc007,
Considering their is only 1cpu in it atm, i'll give it a whirl. ;)
