everytime I try to install these 3.1 drivers from the ati site, I get an error b4 it installs saying something like "INF error. Video driver not found."
has anyone else been able to install these on win2k? im trying to install these, then apply the modded driver files I found on these forums.

You're supposed to get the error. Did you read the instructions with the modded files?
try 3.2 and see what it does. plus i think 3.2 is faster

yes I read the instructions.. and I dont see anything about getting an error during the 3.1 setup. it doesnt happen in any other driver setup.

I get the error with any driver set before cat 3.7. Copy and paste the modded inf and sys files into the ati folder the install created. Than force the driver to update to the C2 for win2k not CX files thru the device manager.

do u do all this after uninstalling your vid card drivers? or do u do this while u have drivers installed and just overwrite them?
when i go to device manager, I have 2 cards, the original and a secondary. should I update the driver and follow the directions to both of them or just my primary one and not the secondary?
and finally, is there a way I can know for sure whether I successfully installed these modded drivers?

I would update both primary and scondary. If it's an older install, uninstall the older driver, reboot, when it finds new hardware stop it from automatically installing, download that specific driver package from ati, and follow the instructions from there.

The advanced properties of the ati control panel will tell you which driver is installed. Or just run 3dmark cat3.1 should be 6.14.01.6292.

D/load Cat 3.1's.
Extract them somwhere.
Get my modded ati files & extract them.
Now copy files in my 3.1 folder over to the extracted Cat 3.1s.
Get to you Device Manager,
"Display Properties" & "Update Drivers"
Install them manually. Show the device manager where the file "C2_7447.inf" is & force it.
Do the same for the "9800XT Secondary".
After that's done, it'll ask you to reboot, say "no".
Install CP 3.1 up to 3.10 (iirc) & you're done.
Remember, CP 4.1-4.4 will not work with these older Catalysts.

well the cat 3.1 setup file i got was a .exe and not zip, so i just followed your directions, except I forgot to install the drivers manually for the 9800Pro Secondary.
rebooted and ran 3dmark.. scored 21,360 (~100 points more than my last 3.7 regular driver run). however, ORB says "This project can not be published due to detected CPU speed variation" still so I cant get an ORB link. so Im guessing everything went ok.
regardless, thnx for drivers minnyboy. :)

Hmmm, what doesn't work about cp 4.1. I use that most of the time. seems to work just fine.

FlyingHamster,
I don't see why the ORB ain't letting you publish your scores....If you click on my link you'll see that my fsb is 0Mhz & I'm supposedly using DX9 (had DX9 but unistalled it)...
I'm probably wrong with the CP4.1 but I tried CP4.3/4.4 & was told that it didn't support my Cat 3.1's...
I noticed an improvement of 100-200 points when comparing different Cat's.
I did some comparisons before from 3.1 to 4.3 & found that 3.1 was the fastest.
I'd post my results but my $hitty Seagate 120GB SATA hdd died on me...Taking my Raid-0 with it....All up, 240GB of Data gone....
Hope my modded ati files help in someway...I'll update the files once I get my hands on either the X800pro or X800XT PE...
Off Topic:
Don't buy Seagate hdd...The one that died was actually an RMAed one (brand new) & didn't last more than 3 months.
Also have another 4 dead Seagate hdd at work....
/rant mode off...
Cheers,
Minnyboy
