Welcome Jakup to XS, nice rig.

Your moving to DD from a Swiftech?

Damn EXA beat me to the punch

Generally people go the other way around (tdx->apogee) to get rid of the horrible mounting and the plexi tops and see an increase in performance...

jAkUp
08-13-2006, 08:14 PM
I really don't like the apogee... the plastic barbs really suck, not to mention it already leaked once :( This is for my Conroe setup though.

Maybe if the TDX is that much worse I will cancel the order, I have done so much reading today that the TDX/Apogee really seems like a toss up depending on who you talk to.

cant you just buy metal barbs?

pauldovi
08-13-2006, 08:35 PM
I know the wooden box and rubber made res are ghetto, but I am pragmatic. I would rather have performance for less. The larger the res, the larger the volume of water, and the more heat it can hold.

might help to actually ahve the fans up against the heater core then?

creidiki
08-13-2006, 08:44 PM
I'm afraid water volume in loop has no effect on temperatures. Just takes slightly longer for them to reach equilibrium once the load changes.

As for the 'pogee barbs, just get G1/4 barbs (DD G1/4 HighFlow) and use both the orings that come with those barbs and those that come with the apogee's plastic barbs. Its what I do on my storm.

pauldovi

No, actually the way they are is just fine. I have 2 on each side, each rated at 96CFM. There is plenty of air moving over the surface of the radiator. Putting the fans on the radiator blocks the center where the fan motor is.

creidiki
08-13-2006, 08:46 PM
I think what he means is that with big fat opening between the fans and rad that isnt sealed 2 of those arent actually doing anything, on account of air takes the path of least resistance.

Volume certainly does have an effect. If you radiator is removing less heat than your processor is adding to the system, it will take longer for the water's temperature to rise. This will take some time, and as I don't leave my system on 24/7 it works quite well.

I have tested to see how much air is pulled from the top. It is quite small. I put a piece of paper over that hole and it was hardly pulled down.

Here is my measily setup.

I am switching the blocks to DD though. Got a TDX and a Chipset cooler on the way :)

Welcome and glad to see you posting here. What "Chipset" cooler do you have on the way? Like you, I will be running Quad soon and there isn't much room on the DFI boards for a chipset cooler. So, I am curious to see what folks are using. I have a Forcetake Chip Force Chipset Cooler on the way. Hopefully it will work/fit.

Nice rig BTW.

jAkUp
08-13-2006, 09:03 PM
Its the DD Maze4 chipset cooler.

I'm not going to be using it on my DFI board though, I am getting these parts for my Conroe setup :D

Well the Jing Ting fit in Quad SLI? Doesn't look like much room, I was thinking of maybe slapping the Jing Ting on the SB with the Conroe board.

Well dam so you mean I got a 35 Gallon aquarium all insulated and riged to the chiller for nothing!?

LOL Jking, though the chiller pulled down 12 liters to 0C in 39Minutes and thats with a crippled chiller cell and frozen over coils! so it will rock when don, and when the chiller isn't running the cell subs in as a res with an air auto purge.

But he is right, more thermal mass makes for happy system and stable temps with less flux.

jay, so now you can play 1 extra round of cs....

Nah, my radiator can keep up with the heat input from the processor most of the time. But when the CPU is under highly intensive stuff there is more heat put in then taken out. The res takes care of that. With the new C2D, I doubt I will have this problem.

My watercooled E6400 and DS3. I just discovered the barbs on the storm are leaking a bit. I'm using teflon tape this time around. I just assembled this yesterday and have to take it apart. Also, there's a slight kink at the outlet of the rad that needed to be taken care of anyway. I'll post pics of the new loop in a week, leaving for vacation today.

can you open the back of your case?, as i am doin my wiring, i'd cut some parts of my mobo tray to route the wires behind...

also note that having some worm drive clamps for your tubing-barb-rad is a must,
also a little longer tubing going out to your rad won't really hurt to avoid kinks,
your rad contains air pockets if you don't move/tilt it around for the air to escape...

hey, what did you use to get the red?

bypolar
08-23-2006, 09:06 PM
I used Toyota Coolant,Glycol based coolant mixed 50/50. It is a nice Deep Red.

Toyata has been using the Red for years,it comes in 1 gallon containers $21.00 US Dollars.

recently they came out with a Pink colored Longer life coolant so ask for the red if you plan on purchasing any.

No, I can't hear the pump at all, not even when it was sucking in air bubbles. Mummified in neoprene foam. Doesn't get warm either. The only thing i can hear is the stupid 7800gt which I should w/c soon. I want total silence. All fans are yate loon too.

Why dont you turn the rad around so the hosing doesnt have to bend?

I always use teflon tape when metal to metal contact.

did, u test the different between 50\50 and 90\10 in a glass or something. with blue pentosin u really didnt loose much color at 90\10.
i guess even 25\75 would be better for u

I did a Little mixing to check Color.I really did not want to end up with Pink. The Toyota coolant is a tad thinner than your Basic Green Glycol based stuff,And I do understand that tomuch antifreeze can hinder performance but I wanted the deep Red Look this time.

yeah, it is really red! and its not like you have a storm either...
would be interresting to se how much difference there really is between 50\50, 90\10 and pure distilled though!

What you Guys think about the wiremanagement ?

In a few weeks im changing all this... Ill add a second dual 120ml in the front so ill need to get rid of the DVD rom and the things that i use to boot and reset. Ive bought some Vadal switch which ill drill some whole on top of the case so that way i can get rid of the thing to boot and reset then ill have enought clerance to mount the second 120ml rad in front using some brakets. Ill also get some new tubing (1/2") and a DD filport along whit a t-line then i can get rid of that cheap reservoir. And finaly ill get some new coolant... Anyways ill post some pics when im done whit this ;)

It already finished the bleeding but the stupid barbs of the micro leeked and all most of the liquid leeked out and air got into the loop. Been full of bubbles since. O.O

Haven't bothered to refill it since it doesn't hurt the temps at the moment and I'll be redoing myset up in the next week or two.

DragonOrta, indeed it's 1/2". It's probably the clarity of the tubing that makes it look bigger :)

Thanks for the comment Xeon th MG Pony! :)

There you go :) Laing DDC-1 plus & plexi top & plexi res in full glory.

Look at the whirlpool in the resevoir, at least if static picture can show. Laing DDC-1plus (new revision) does deliver serious water punch, as flow rate is really (and visibly) high. You may notice that I'm using the plexi bay cover too (on the case) - so now there is a proper "window" at the front and case is properly closed too. Other parts are X1900XTX + Edvard König EK-FCX1900 & X2 3800 + Swiftech Storm. As I don't like the cluttered tubing, I'm keeping the minimal connection distance. That SilenX blue fan on the left is cooling the A8N-SLI Premium chipset. As you know, this motherboard have passive chipset cooling (when you are using CPU fan). In my case, I had to improvise ... by attaching it to the Storm water block - but it's working quite well and fan is almost silent. That black fan just beneath the X1900XTX is the VREG cooling leftover from the 7800GTX and it's not used now. It's there just in case You may notice the advantage when you can use the barbs on the both side of the EK water block. It's improving the flow and there is much less clutter, because of the straight tube lines. Tubing in question is Tygon R-3603.

Here is the front case look with the normal, dimmed desk light:

http://62.204.32.7:10973/x1900/x1900_lights_on.jpg

On the top of the case I have DD FillPort. You will notice that I'm using the Fillport & PlexiRes ... just for fun. It's convenient way to top-up the coolant, without opening your case or even accessing the reservoir (as picture with funnel can show you). I used it with great success and you can even fill & bleed the system. Neat! :) Pics:

http://62.204.32.7:10973/x1900/x1900_fillport.jpg

Here is the outside of the case, where the tubing goes to the radiator:

http://62.204.32.7:10973/x1900/x1900_outside_1_s.jpg

Here is the order:

Swiftech bracket + fan vibration dampener + 35mm fan + vibration dampener + shroud + PA160 (cross flow) set-up. It's extending the case a bit, but it's not visible and I have plenty of space in the back of the case. Build and attachment is sturdy and reliable. No problems there. Fan is dead silent. Slow RPM & 35mm depth helps a lot

Here is the climate control system:

http://62.204.32.7:10973/x1900/x1900_mcubed.jpg

Of course, mCubed T-balancer XL + miniNG control units. They are taking care that temperatures are optimal and at the same time dynamically controlling the fans and DDC pump speed, according to the temp probes (including the coolant probe). Generally, they are monitoring the coolant temperature, DDC pump rpm/flow rate and environment temperatures. MiniNG is capable to handle up to 20W per channel, and that is just enough for the new 18W DDC version. Also, sensor hub is capable to power off the system in case of the pump failure/low water flow or critical temperatures. Clever huh

Lights off - final look with side panel, multiple angels:

http://62.204.32.7:10973/X1900/wc_night2.jpg

Bright ambient light:

http://62.204.32.7:10973/X1900/wc_lights2.jpg

Back/side of the PA160, side of the case and water temp probe on the Y-line, just before the PA160 inlet:

http://62.204.32.7:10973/X1900/wc_side-back.jpg

Few comments about my side panel. Center (window) of the panel is detachable and replaceable with single aluminium panel (so that you can have all-aluminium side panel version). I hacked that detachable part a bit, so that I have a soundproof panel version and I can now easily replace the window (in case that it's not needed or if more silence is prefered) with this:

http://62.204.32.7:10973/X1900/lian_li-spdoor2.jpg

It's coated with AcoustiPack foam blocks (with the anechoic surface)

Daylight, camera flash on. Laing DDC-1 plus & plexi top & plexi res:

http://62.204.32.7:10973/X1900/wc_ddc-plus1.jpg

Notice the red impeller of the new 18W DDC-1 plus. Also, you may notice the AcoustiPack foam blocks just beneath the pump itself. They are absorbing the pump noise, additionally. Of course, there is just enough clearance so that pump can cool itself properly.

Daylight, case pictures (front):

@ DVL73: Dude that looks wicked sick, total pwnage (at least cosmetics) but yes, please do replace that DDC res with a real res and a normal Alphacool DDC top.

@ Hungry: As posted in your thread, it looks nice, but you should check out that T connector and switch it out with a Y connector so that the block recieves some flow.

@ferrari_freak & @JoeBar

I did put the disclaimer (in the main post) that I'm ready to sacrifice the substance for a style, as I really like the res look, with the bay window in front :D apart from the fact that practically I can revert back to just T-line + Fillport (my previous set-up) and plexi top.

It's so relaxing watching all that pretty blue water rushing in & jumping in the plexires :) It's effective to, as it gives "dynamic" (may I say alive) PC look. I had couple of (non technical) friends at my place and they were stunned with the PC. Couldn't take their eyes from it  for a loooong time. Yes, I know it's just a "bling", but hey, I guess that I still believe that it's possible to mix the fashion & form, even when we are talking about the uninsping PC.

Can someone tell me the inner diameter of the Alphacool plexi top?
Look at the pic... it doesn't look very wide to me.

Doesn't it defeat the purpose of 11mm (7/16") ID tubing?

To me it's like a chain: as strong as its weakest link.

Plz correct me if I'm wrong, I currently have a Swifty MCP655 so I may be talking crap :p:

I know, it rocks :D. I used a 1" holesaw with a bit in the middle for the tline cap. I didn't measure, nor did I tape anything. That's very nice. Good WM... maybe you'll try to use a normal & folded IDE cable. ;)

@ adamant415

in the front on your lian li it seems as though you have a dual/triple bay cooler...??

is that a lian li hard drive cage, or is it like a scythe "kama bay", if so where did you get either from (and could you mount a 3.5" disk behind the kama bay if it is indeed that???)..

cheers,

I FINALLY have my build set up for good!!!

Dont laugh at my use of tape, or foam for the HD cage.

I used a bit too much tubing in a few places but it is fine until I rebuild in 2008.

I'll either extend the pump out or turn the case to make the t-line vertical to bleed... Probably do that for a week and then she is going to be closed and locked and the key is going to be thrown away... I have been slowly working my way to this machine since about April and she is finally done. (Well, gonna add another exhaust fan but that is nothin')

My specs are:

Naked Opty 165 CCBBE 0610 3.0ghz at 1.475
DFI Lanparty Ultra-D
MSI x1900xtx
2x74gb Raptor 0FCL0 in RAID 0
160gb Seagate Storage
Ultra X-finity 500w PSU

Swiftech Storm CPU Block
Maze 4 GPU Block
Modded MCP350
BIP II w/ two Yate Loons in Pull
7/16" Masterkleer

It is a scythe kama bay. I used it to mount the fan and radiator. You could mount a 3.5" disk behind it, but not with a fan and radiator.

But the bubbles make it a little more interesting looking than solid water :p:

Actually how much performance is lost by having some small bubbles? Is it dangerous in any way?

plenty dangerous, you never know when a certain ddc might get itself stuck up
if too much air bubbles in a loop...
also with air bubbles passing thru a ddc makes it noisy...
but i guess it would really depend on what pump he's using...

OK. I know almost nothing about watercooling at this point, so please have patience with this n00b, I'll be asking questions every so often :)

Eventually when I have money and time I'll watercool, have a worklog with a case mod for it, everything  I already have some parts picked out too :woot:

Modding this stacker to fit a pa 120.3 in the bottom took me way longer than I thought it would. The stacker's designed to fit a 2x120mm rad in the bottom so some metalwork is required, but that's half the fun, right?

With thanks to Clokker for the inspiration.

EDIT: redid my loop thanks to SDkevin's rec.

@vyper: re-clamp your T-Line, it is wrong! URGENT!

Edit: you shouldn't clamp at the tip of the barbs, I'm surprise that nothing is loose yet :) you should push the tube all the way in and clamp at the body of barbs not at very tip of the barbs

LOL! I just did the Same kind of mOdification to my Stacker, so it can fit a PA120.3 Used a Jig saw and soem other tools. It looks a lot more Home made than yours but it's clean and works perfectly ;) So many ways to Work on these Stackers! Ive seen so many Different watercooling set-up in that case that i had a lot of ideas on how to mount things when i build my first WC set-up in it (Of Course half were nto good lol). Now im at my second WC kit installed in it and i felt like it needed some Hard core Mod's to fit a Nice\Clean WC Set-up! Ill take some pics this morning!

Nice job! Vyper!

vyper
09-23-2006, 06:46 AM
@Patriote: yeah, can't wait to see the pics. Like others have said, the Stacker's a forgiving case, it'll take a lot of punishment and still come out looking halfway ok. Meanwhile, I've got a lot of work ahead of me redoing my loop on account for my n00bness. :(

I feel left behind :( . Lol been planning on getting my first water cooling loop, but our friend Petra still hasn't managed to release his DDC top! Maybe I'll just bite the bullet and go with the Alphacool top but I haven't heard too many good things about PPCs lately. And damn Vyper the PA120.3 is huge. Dunno if I should install on the top of the case or the bottom... The top would look better because it would hide the rad and have a shmexy grill on the top but the bottom would allow for easier bleeding because res would be the highest point in the loop and also allow for easier wire management.... Aaaahhh.... Decisions decisions.. Advice?

I agonized for days and nights about whether to go top or bottom with the PA 120.3 - it's beast sized and the stacker won't take it without some modding. In the end, I went with bottom because:

1) there's so much space down there - at the top you have to worry about the psu and wires, the motherboard and peripherals, as well as the stock 80mm blowhole. Plus that plastic cap (for want of a better description) gets in the way of things.
2) I wanted push/pull with 6 yate loons and there just wouldn't be space at the top for that much radiator
3) Small temp difference between the top of the case and the bottom.
4) Slightly easier to bleed

Unless you plan on mounting it on the outside on top? But why, when the stacker is so roomy?

thunderstruck!
09-23-2006, 09:34 AM
Creidiki put hit 120.3 in the front of his stacker. Also I hope you fixed the tubing problem and put them all the way onto the barbs.

I'll prolly put it bottom with 3 Yates because I need the front for other things.

Yes PA120.3 is at the bottom w/ pull configuration, PSU doesn't block the fan performance since this is a pull configuration, PSU only block the part of airflow but it doesn't matter at all on this setup. I have the HDD rack cutting in half and reverse it so I can have better wire management, w/ pull configuration which helps to cool my hard drives very well, not only I have fresh air pull into system and provides somewhere airflow to PSU too

Pat's Latest Updates on His RIG! :P

Specs in Sig.

Let's Start whit the hole i did for the Thermochill PA120.3 Radiator.
I did it using a Jigsaw, Steel File*, a Drill and Finaly but not least... Some Strong hands!
I began by tracing the hole whit a rule and then started to drill some hole to get the Steel blade of the Jigsaw into the case...
And boom the hole was Completed after an hour. Filed of the sides of the hole and added some Black Electrical Tape all around the hole and it was done.

PS: I feel like a noob posting what kind of hole i did for the Radiator... Posting right after the Master of cuting holes for the Rad... **Cough**sdkevin**Cough** :P
