Hi Guys
Might be a dumb question, but can someone answer this for me please....
Would it be okay to transport a Prom / Vapo unit in as checked in luggage on a normal airline flight??
I am not worried about handling (it will be well packed). I just dont know if the luggage compartments for air freight / commercial flights are any different. I am assuming that there will be no issues with this but just want to confirm.
Look forward to your knowledgable comments ;)

Id check with the airline first.
They may have a problem with it as its a pressurised.
Like codeRed said id check first but im pretty sure they dont allow anything presurised on a passinger flight. espeacally now with all the crap thats going on in the world. I remember when here in the US you could bring firearms on
a flight as long as it was checked into bagage, but now you cant even take a pair of nailclippers on. :(

the way they treat ur luggage, i'd be surprised if it doesnt get totally owned...especially the condensor where it is the weakest..
probably need to find a wooden pallet and strap it down..

I would build a crate for it and ship it correctly. Luggage isn't strong enough to handle the weight of the unit.
The airlines is going to check what's inside of the luggage because they're going to freak-out because of the weight. You may as well be straight up with the airlines and ship it properly.

Have you watched airline baggage handlers? I don't care how well you package it, it will break. I've seen a baggage handler pick up a box from the ramp exiting the plane turn his head from side to side looking for somewhere to set it down, not finding something he turned 90 degrees and dropped it from chest level to the concrete. Even if you wrapped a prom in bubble wrap 8 inches think (20cm for the metric people) it still wouldn't survive that without damage.
The best way is to ship it with a regular shipper (UPS, FedEx, ..etc) since their stuff is stacked and bundled into containers and are moved by forklift and not likely to be dropped from 4 feet up onto concrete. If you could bring it as your carryon item, err skip that you'd probably get arrested or something when one of the security idiots xrays it and thinks it's a bomb.

Also -with regards to the freighting - Qantas will allow the unit to be transported as checked in luggage - anything that has less than 12kgs net volume of refridgerant is okay  This makes the 70 grams of R134 a non issue :D
You wouldnt believe how many phone calls this took though - what a hassle (although I got to listen to lots of nice messages about how much the airline values my business  )
I understand the comments about handling, but the A$300 option to freight this makes it worth the risk to me - will just have to make sure that it is well packed, and will at least pass the 4ft bounce test  :(
Thanks for your comments :toast:

the condensor piping is my greatest concern, it looks fragile enough as it is :(
