Hi, I've been trying to get this damn problem fixed for several months now. I have a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 Sata HD in my computer, running of ICH5-R (Intel's controller, I keep Promise disabled). My computer is overclocked 24/7 @ 257 fsb and 3600mhz (2.8c). I've been having the following problems.
257 - 258 fsb is my absolute limit. Above that and I experience tons of BSODS within minutes. The BSODS always point to a system driver. Some examples of BSODS I've seen: caused by: ATAPI.SYS (argh can't remember any more, spacing out).
Above 258 fsb, I get tons of random BSODS. These happen regardless of voltage on my chip. My ram will be running at 3:2 divider and this will still happen.
However, I know this chip is good. The guy that sold it to me used to benchmark for SharkyExtreme, and had this chip running at a purpoted 3.95 ghz (280 fsb). Through several conversations he told me that he attained 3.8 + stable on wc'ing (similar system to mine) at 1.65v. My motherboard is not vmodded at all.
I have an external wc'ing system consisting of a Dtek Heatercore, L30 pump, Bay-Rez, White Water, and MCW 20 on the northbridge. My temps for cpu however around 19c idle and 23c load (case ambient is about 24-27c).
Here is the meat of the issue
My hard drive is basically dead. It won't be detected by my bios (I get error that says "NO Hard Drive Detected!") despite the fact that it shows up in the bios. I've had this happen before, and reloading to defaults always seemed to work. This time I got a ridiculous character string for the hard drive name in the bios, and no boot. After a reset, HD name went back to normal, but still no boot. I tried reverting to promise controller, but I still could not get into windows (BSOD). This was all at 200 fsb and 2.8ghz.
(sorry for the long post)
A week or so ago, I had to reinstall windows because of corruption. This has happened to me several times in the past. I always chalked it up to windows crapping out. It happens often times at no load (idle state). I've gone 1/2 a week without experiencing bsods, however they inevitably happen.
I am a diehard overclocker. I need to get this chip running to its full potential. I have all the hardware I need. I just bought a soldering iron +accessories, and have been homing my skills. When I get this problem solved I will be doing vdimm mod, droop mod. Guys I need help. The i875 chipset should have an agp/pci lock. However, obviously I am getting excessive HD errors. Other than getting a new (and different brand) HD, what am I doing wrong with my overclocking? BTW, my mem is memtest86 stable at 258fsb at 5:4. Even running 3:2 at 258fsb + I get bsods.
Thank you for reading this. Any help would be much appreciated.
