at ebay I can get a 9500np with the L shaped memory that can be softmodded to a 9700 or I can get a 9500 pro, which the listing says you can turn into a 9700... but I thought you could only make the np's with the L whatever a 9700... and, I'm seeing higher bids on the 9500 pro, so what should I get?

get whichever is cheaper. both can be modded, but it depends on luck. the np will most likely oc to a pro no problem

I had a 9500np up untill about 3 weeks ago. It lasted me about a year and a half and thanks to Riva-Tuner I had it softmodded to 9800pro stats and it ran fine. Once in a great while I would get an artifact but for the most part I paid 140 bucks through newegg for it and I got my worth out of it.

However as all good things must die so did that card. When I RMA'd it to new egg they offered me either a refund or a 9600pro as a replacment. I took the refund and not 3 days later Best Buy of all places had a sale on 9800pros for 199 bucks so I grabbed it. So for about 50 bucks more I now have a true 9800pro lol

so now you feel great because you killed your 9500 returend it, and told the company something along the likes "it just stopped working someday" and you now have a 9800pro.

Now how did I kill it? By enabling the 4 extra pipelines via a softmod that in no way physically modified it?

Did I RMA it untill I got one that would work as a 9800?

No I bought just one, got lucky after we all found out ATI was selling 9500's that in fact where 9800's that had failed the batch test.

Is it no wonder that after Unwinder offered the softmod that ATI began selling a physically different version of the card?

I would have been happy to receive a replacment 9500np but was it no wonder that they no longer sold them?

Please if your going judge me then perhaps you should read the email i sent to newegg. Or perhaps recall that for some reason Newegg themselves where selling the cards as a special for just a few bucks more than normal knowing everyone was buying them for that purpose.

I am sure there are hundreds of 9500np's out there still cranking along as 9700 or 9800's. I very much doubt softmodding versus hard modding a card is going to cause all of them just to die all of a sudden.

prolly what he meant was the overclocking to 9800 specs

I actually never overclocked it that far. Did not have aftermarket cooling for it so I left it at specs or a few mhz over. Just by applying the riva tuner soft mod however it really boosted the specs.

It was the 4 versus 8 pipeline thing. There was no way I could afford the 400 dollar 9800 pro but when unwinder offered a mod via riva tuner I gave it a whirl and was suprised.

But as to the orginal poster, if you want to take a roll of the dice grab a 9500np. Some will run as 9700 or 9800's just fine, others will artifact all to heck

supposedly the ones off ebay have been running in the seller's computer as a 9700 or whatever and they're selling it because of upgrading to a 9800pro or whatever... so maybe I'll get one in hopes that it really does run.
