View Full Version : New MB won't post....thoughts?

Just put in my new Abit IC7-MAX3 (RMA from Newegg) after my last had an untimely death by fire. Anyway, I put my 2.4C to run until I can update BIOS to 14 for EE support. I turn on the computer and everything power up but nothing else happens. No POST, no beep, the monitor doesn't gain sync....nothing. The lights on the CDROM and the floppy come on solid with no blinking. The power and the HDD activity lights both come on too and stay on solid. Other than that. Nothing.
Could this be a video card problem? Would the system POST without a video card? It would, right? This is not the first time I have received a DOA MB from the egg. Maybe I'm just unlucky.
Oh, I also checked all the line voltages on my PSU. Everything is good. One thing I do note: the Southbridge seems to get quite hot in a hurry even with a heatsink epoxied to it.
Thoughts? Help? Thanks.

Did you test the CPU on another machine to make sure that the CPU is dead?
Your problem sounds CPU related to me, in the case its not I would recommend:
Disconnect everything, plug in only nesc. per se video card, cpu, ram, and try to boot up.
let me know how it goes :toast:

Also try putting a stick of any other ram than what you have, Single stick.
I've seen this before. And it seems to work. Even when reseting the cmos does nothing. Usually on a bad overclock. I've seen people about to RMA boards, try this then they work, Then put your original memory back in.
Sometimes they just seem to hold the memory timings from what was in it last.

Thats a fair question as its easy to miss something simple when plugging all that stuff in.
I had a similiar issue when I was rebuilding my rig upon buying a new cooling setup.
The hard drive and cd-rw lights would come on and stay on..nothing else would happen.
Ended up that both the drives were dead...static discharge I am guessing. Must have been from moving them around so much during the transfer...they did end up sitting on my floor for several days until I could get it finished up.
Had to buy new drives, then all was well.
I would stick in the vid card, cpu, and 1 stick drr to see if it posts. I would also check all the power rails of the connectors that plug into the motherboard.

I'll agree here... sounds like it was set to high in bios previously, I've had it happen before, have an odd 128 stick of PC2100 has always brought mine back..

Nothing helps. MB is dead. Like I said...southbridge gets VERY hot as it sits (only takes about 1 minute)...I would say it gets to at least 50C....
Gonna have to RMA again...how depressing.

Before you take the green pill to RMA the board, did u try remove the CMOS battery and the board still doesn't work? Sometimes it's weird, when we clear the CMOS using the jumper, it just doesn't work.

Nope. Nothing helps...still. It is packed up and ready to go back to Newegg. Luckily I have another MAX3 on the way already. I think this will be #5 for me. I don't seem to have a lot of luck with this particular model seeing as 2 of them have arrived dead from Newegg.com.

Why the MAX3? The P4C800-E is much better!

Actually get an original IC7-G, then mod it the Hipro way and kick the snot out of all the competition! I much prefer the original IC7-G over the max 3....
