I went through and installed the OS. And when I rebooted to go into it, I had mouse and keyboard until I reached the login. Which, they just give no response. The keyboard wont lightup... nada...
I switched keyboards and tried. Again, same thing.. I was even tryin to spot the exact time when it quit reading the keyboard by hitting the capslock key on and off. Read it fine through everything. All the way until it reached the login screen, then nada.. nuthin at all... anyone have an idea on how to hlpe me out on this?
Remember, COMPLETE LINUX NEWB!!!!!!!
Dont say get into root this and edit this cuz I will have abso freakin no clue what the bloody blue hades your talkin about.. you will have to explain in idiot mode....

thanks if yea can help.

OK- the os info: it is RedHat 7.3, with packages for the K12LTSP diskless node network.

The RH is exactly the same as standard 7.3, the K12 Linux Terminal Server Project stuff integrates with it "out of the box" so to speak, and is used by some of us on the Distributed Computing teams here to be able to run pcs without hard drives. RedHat comes with K12LTSP Distro, so it makes things easy for newbies like me:)

Ok- my only clue on the problem is that the keyboard seems to work ok up until logging in to the gui- could this be an XWindows config problem?

C'mon linux gurus: you guys have saved me before!

Hmm...personally I would think it would be an XFree86 problem. Boot into single-user mode...see if the same thing happens. I would explain in lamen's terms if it wasn't 12:30 AM and school tomorrow. I'll post more tomorrow...'less someone beats me to it. ;)

I found this google group link (http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&threadm=9hfvki%245at9v%241%40ID-86865.news.dfncis.de&rnum=17&prev=/%20groups%3Fq%3Dredhat%2Bkeyboard%2Bnot%2Bworking% 26h%3Cbr%20/%3El%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DUTF-8%26oe%3DUTF-8%26start%3D10%26sa%3DN) where they are having the same problem, but I still haven't found a solution.

I will look tommorow and see what I can find.

Looks like a keyboard config problem in /etc/XF86Config

And um.... David What in the bloody blue hell does that mean?

It means the options in the Config file for the GUI are not correct. Thats why your keyboard will work in text mode linux but not in the GUI (called 'XFree86')

Look for the following in the file /etc/XF86Config (may be slightly different). Post what you see:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Generic Keyboard"
Option "CoreKeyboard"
Option "XkbRules" "Xfree86"
Option "XkbModel" "pc104"
Option "XkbLayout" "gb"
EndSection

If you reinstall, you need to uncheck the option for Redhat to boot into the gui automatically. Since the keyboard completely quits when x starts, there is very little that can be done from there.

A brief description of your hardware may be useful, esp. keyboard, mouse, and video card along with whether the input devices are ps/2 or usb.

When it boots, are you able to hit ctl+alt+F1 to get to a command prompt?

Generic PS/2 Mouse, 2 buttons
Generic Keyboard PS/2 (Memorex Waterproof)
SGI Virge 4meg Video card ~ PCI (Believe this to be correct, cant recall exactly)
Onboard USB, havent been able to use... with 2k or XP, not sure why, never bothered to figure it out, havent needed it.
Havent tried the ctrl+alt+F1, no clue?!

Anything else needed?

Have you tried unchecking where it says boot into the gui automatically?

Then you should be able to get to root, and type "setup" to setup everything mouse, kbd, video, ect. ect.

Will have to reinstall it again to do that.... Ive only done that 4 or 5 times in the past 3 days..... god I hate linux at this point.............

Well before I am going to reinstall it, I am going to wait until I get the VRM for this thing.

Yeah you will and it's easy to miss it's gonna be on the bottom of the screen. There's a checkmark box there that says something about automatically starting with the gui.
I missed it the first time I installed.

It's RH 7.3 right?

kew. You'll see it then. I can't remember which screen it's on tho.

Oh one more thing. Are you telling setup that it's a server or workstation?

Server. I am planning on using it to boot up several other systems that will not have hard drives. If you look in Gne Hard you will see my post about what Im planning on.

When you boot, try typing linux 3 at the lilo prompt (the prompt asking which OS you want to boot into). This should get you to a command prompt instead of the graphical logon.

logon as root using the password you set during install. Then type:
pico /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
(remember that case is important in linux)

Use your keyboard to scroll down in the file. There are a couple of things I've found so far for you to try:
Scroll down until you find the section on the keyboard (it will look a lot like what David posted above) and post what you see.

Then scroll down to the mouse section (similar to the above) and post that.

It would also help if you post the section labeled Section Module so we can see what's loading.

Hehe... hum... well I wasnt real sure when I was installing so I installed the grub version If I remember correctly... Is there a way I can change that without a reinstall? If not I will prolly get a reinstall done soon....

Ummm... you're not going to like the answer, but when grub starts highlight redhat (should already be) and type e on the keyboard.

You should see a line like (hd0,0)/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda2 (your's will be a little different)

add single to the end. ie:
(hd0,0)/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda2 single

and that should get you to a command prompt
Originally posted by IFMU
Ok, Ive tried this a few times and I keep getting an unrecognized command error.

This is what it is before I do anything
Line1 ~ root (hd0,0)
Line2 ~ kernel /vmlinux-2.4.18-3 ro root=/dev/sda2
Line3 ~ initrd /initrd-2.4.18-3.img

Now, I added in,
(hd0,0)/vmlinuz root=dev/hda2 single
I attempted after 3, and after 1. Neither worked... What am I missing?

Ok, Im a moron..... arg.... Ok I added it in at the end of Line 1 and Its booting ...... lol........................... um........ Ill post when it gets somewhere.. so far it looks like its booting normally?
Ok..... It went through, and I had removed a TV card and it asked to remove the info on it. Which I did.... then for about a second I saw a command prompt that said server login then it went into the regular boot up screen and froze..

Ok, heres the deal. I have XP installed on this system. XP with a PCI RAID Controller. I removed the 10g that has XP on it. Placed in a 3g hdd. Which, I installed Linux on. Now, I did nothing with the RAID Card inside linux, even told the install to leave it alone.
Now, once I get back into XP, its not reading it right!~!
Says the RAID is unallocated in the Disk management area of the Administrator Tools. Any idea WTF this is about??
I swear, if it killed the RAID. öööö linux it can suck my :banana::banana::banana:adoodle mutha doo.

It shouldn't have messed with your raid card at all, but honestly, to save time and to be less of a hassle I'd dual boot Linux/XP.
