Hey my first post in a while and a warning at that.
A few weeks ago my rig started shutting down on hot days!
XP 2500 @ 200x11 (:D ergo xp3200 on air Vcore 1.86)
Anyhow that means it reached temps of 75C my bios shutdown temperature, well So I thought weather in los angeles messin with my stacy. So I downclocked her to xp 3000 200x10.5 1.74 vcore and when that didn't help 2000 MHZ xp 2800 equivalent 200x10 with barton core. well I still came home to a shutdown Stacy! :upset:
So I said to myself I have to build my cpu duct so I was gonna take some measurements and I found the problem it was totally clogged up with dust-----> so no air flow or cooling
Well long story short my rigs back up to xp 3200 speeds and my temps are back to normal (depending on temp a little under 50C) :rocker:
So if you got an SLK and are having higher temps lately use a water color brush(soft clean) and get the dust out Will definetly save your Day well CPU

indeed, SLK heatsinks clog up easily

Dust buildup will always be a problem for heatsinks. The SLK are more vulnerable to this because of the thin spacing between the fins, but it applies to all heatsinks. I used to have problems with my Vantec Aeroflow back in NYC before I put filters on my intake fans.

Don't think I've ever had a PC in one piece long enough for dust to settle, let alone clog anything....

Definately good advice though, and if your one of those build it and forget it kinda peepz, do open your case now ang again to check/clean it...

Three days would be enough to clog up my system pretty bad in NYC :( was living in a dorm without central A/C so had to have the window open all the time.

My new air case came with a 120 MM removeable/cleanable filter. When I add my cold intake fo the CPU it will have a filter too.

(To check out my new build see linkage...TONs of air movement in this cold rig...this is a sever case which has a air filter from the factory. Server builders know the dangers of dust....but I'm using this for my lan rig cause it is light and powerful...)

I think that people underestimate the dangers of dust to cooling...gotta clean my watercooling raditors from dust periodically too...a vacum cleaner with brush attachment is an excellent place to start if the brush is clean and has soft bristles.

I use a filterless shaper image air cleaner in my office too to help combat dust (Ionic Breeze they call it). It really helps extend the periods between computer cleanings. :)

yup a clean computer is a happy computer no doubt. I made it a habit to always give my (when I did air) sinks a blast of air whenever I was messing around inside case.
