do you mean the thermal pad? on the bottom, waxy black square? you can leave it if you dont have any better tim, like AS or generic thermal grease..

as long as they're not right over the CPU heat spreader its ok, I think its just wax, you could heat the HS and rub off with cloth, or maybe mild solvent..

yeah, AS5 just a tiny amount, half size of pea, dont spread, when you put on HS swivel a bit and tim will spread for you...
if you're going to OC this CPU (of course) but dont want inconvenient or $$$ cooling may I suggest:

made a huge diff in my temps over stock HS (14c), is quiet, and very reasonably priced...

No, NEVER apply thermal adhesive to your CPU!
And yes take off the black TIM crap on the heatsink first.

The black thermal tape will work fine and very effectively on Stock Intel hsf. However, you must remove it if you wish to use another thermal compound. It is much harder to remove the Stock Intel hsf from the cpu, if black thermal tape is not removed because it becomes hard after use.
Hmmm try taking off the fan and let it soak in really hot water, then try to scrape it off? worked for the AMD pink ones for me. Another thing would be to scrape as much off as you can then lap it

Akasa TIM Clean works wonders :D Either on offensive black gunk or offensive pink gunk. So does carb cleaner as well, but it might chew up your liver ;)
